One line from Theo Epstein's pregame chat in the Cubs' dugout, in response to a question about whether there is any hope for a Kyle Schwarber return this season: "No, he can't play this year." Okay, then.

Add another notch to Mookie Betts' case to be crowned AL MVP. Homer No. 30, a solo shot to open the second inning at Fenway against Rays starter Matt Andriese, and it puts a dent in an advertisement atop the Green Monster.

Clayton Kershaw will pitch in a simulated game at Dodger Stadium on Tuesday and manager Dave Roberts was jokingly asked if Tim Tebow will be there to hit. "I don't know if Tebow will be a part of that," Roberts said. "I know there's some strength behind his swing. I saw a little video. Great athlete. I just don't know if he's ready for the Clayton Kershaw slider, though."

In case you'd forgotten all the ways Bryce Harper can find to beat you, he just sent out a reminder. By scoring from first on a single!

Jayson Werth loves to remind the Phillies he used to play in Philly. His HR tonight makes 7 in his last 15 games at Citizen Bank Park. No curtain calls for him, though!

CC Sabathia had some interesting things to say about the Colin Kaepernick situation before tonight's with the Royals: "It's his right as a citizen. There's a lot of stuff going on that's not right; it's just something that he chose to do. It's his right. I think it's a good, non-violent way to try to get some change." Although Sabathia said his brother-in-law is in the military and has served in Iraq, he did not consider Kaepernick's protest as a slap at the military. "I'm kind of indifferent on it; it's weird," he said. "I understand where he's coming from. Obviously being an African-American, raising two African-American boys, it's scary. It's something that's going on and something we need to change. Like I said, it's his way, his opinion of trying to non-violently – not hurt cops or anything like that or hurt anybody – way of getting his point across." Carmelo said a couple months ago that athletes need to come together "I think people have. With what went on with D-Wade and his cousin, him being at the thing in Chicago, or was thinking about going to the town hall meeting they had on ESPN, I think it's a good way to hopefully get some change."

Tarp is coming off at Wrigley Field, about an hour before game time. No announcement of a delay so we should be ready for an on-time first pitch.

If you haven't watched Trea Turner play yet, you're missing something special. All he's done in August is: 42 hits, 27 runs scored, 10 steals & a .959 OPS. He's changed the whole vibe of the Nationals.

Saw John Lackey headed out of the clubhouse to throw a side session during pregame access, but no word on how it went as Cubs manager Joe Maddon hadn't spoken to him before meeting with the media. We'll update that after the game. Suspicion here is that he "got after it".

Want to know Cubs manager Joe Maddon's philosophy on the rust-or-rest dichotomy when making out his lineups this time of the year? Can't say whether it holds up syllogistically, but here it is.
