The White Sox and Cubs enter their matchup Monday on completely different paths. The White Sox have lost nine straight games, tied for the longest losing streak in MLB. The Cubs, on the other hand, are 8-1 since the All-Star Break and with a win Monday could take the lead in the NL Central for the first time since May 26.

A four to six week absence for Clayton Kershaw would be more devastating from a rankings perspective than I indicated on today's Fantasy Focus Baseball podcast. I suggested he'd be my No. 4 starting pitcher in my upcoming rankings update before hearing that timetable. Now, he'd make maybe 6-7 more starts and be just my No. 13 starter.

It's never good when your franchise pitcher goes on the shelf for four-to-six weeks, but if there was ever a team well positioned to withstand the prolonged absence of Clayton Kershaw, it's this year's Dodgers. That said, this adds urgency to L.A.'s trade deadline search for a mid- to upper-rotation starter, a need that already existed. The tangible impact could be this: The asking price for Yu Darvish and Sonny Gray probably just went up. Also, while top prospect Walker Buehler remains a possibility for late-season bullpen help, it's hard to see the Dodgers looking to him as a rotation solution this soon.

The report that Clayton Kershaw will miss 4-to-6 weeks certainly means the Dodgers are more likely to pursue Yu Darvish, if the Rangers deal him. The Dodgers are the best team in baseball, but consider: Kershaw's health is now an unknown, Rich Hill's blister issues could surface again at any time, Brandon McCarthy is battling his own blister problem, and you can't trust Kenta Maeda in a playoff game. Barring a win streak over the next seven days, the Rangers should trade Darvish and the Dodgers would be the favorite to land him.

The Cubs sent Felix Pena back to Triple A while activating Kyle Hendricks from the disabled list. Hendricks starts on Monday afternoon against the White Sox.

The Brewers, who are trying desperately to turn things around, are actively exploring both starter and relief options. As ESPN's Buster Olney reported, they've also talked to Detroit about second baseman Ian Kinsler. But this appears to be more a case of Detroit trying to link Kinsler with reliever Justin Wilson and move a veteran salary. The Brewers would love to have Kinsler, but pitching is their main priority at the moment. Kinsler has a $10 million club option for 2018 with a $5 million buyout. If the Brewers were to assume that financial obligation, it could lessen the player package Detroit receives for Wilson.
