Here is the translation of what Jorge Soler told me on being traded from the Cubs to the Royals: "I'd like to thank the Cubs for everything, especially for the chance to make it to the big leagues and win a World Series, and I'm excited to now go to Kansas City and earn the opportunity to play every day."

Asked about Yoan Moncada, White Sox manager Rick Rentería drew a familiar comparison: "The first clip I saw of him, he reminded me a little bit from his setup and everything of (Robinson) Cano." Red Sox evaluators often likened Moncada to Cano. "I know that, at 21 years of age, he still has a long way to go in terms of what he's ultimately going to be," Rentería added. "I think he's a very talented human being who we hope is going to be an impact-type player."

Nats skipper Dusty Baker on free agent closer Aroldis Chapman, who spent four years with Baker in Cincinnati but would cost Washington a pretty penny. "Most of the time, salary supercedes the relationship."

Royals GM Dayton Moore isn't just resigning himself to losing Eric Hosmer, Mike Moustakas, Lorenzo Cain and Danny Duffy when they become free agents after the 2017 season. "I think we'll make a run at some of these guys to long-term contracts," Moore said. "I can't tell you who." The Royals finalized a trade to send Wade Davis to the Cubs today. The addition of right fielder Jorge Soler gives the Royals more flexibility to listen to offers for Jarrod Dyson, who is also a year away from free agency.

The Yankees have made the Matt Holliday signing official. He'll DH, while also backing up in the outfield and first base.

ESPN Stats and Information

Over the last three seasons, Wade Davis owns the lowest ERA and opponent OPS among pitchers with at least 100 innings pitched during that span.

How high should we value Ian Desmond now that he's on the Rockies? Eric Karabell makes the case that he'll be a top-10 outfielder in 2017. Desmond in Coors a top-10 fantasy outfielder

Angels manager Mike Scioscia is planning to have Huston Street, Cam Bedrosian and Andrew Bailey compete for the team's closer job in spring training.

Zack Wheeler told reporters at Citi Field on Wednesday during a coat drive that he's amenable to whatever role the Mets select. Wheeler is due to resume throwing a baseball later this month. He has missed two full seasons due to setbacks in his return from Tommy John surgery. "I've started my whole life, and obviously I'd like to do that," Wheeler said, according to Newsday. "But they're looking out for me, innings-wise and stuff like that. I've been out for two years, so … whatever's best for my health is what's fine with me and the plan going forward." The Mets have floated having Wheeler potentially start 2017 in the bullpen to shave innings before entering the rotation later in the year.

ESPN Stats and Information

Wade Davis is 4-0 with four saves and a 0.84 ERA in 32 1/3 career postseason innings. He was on the mound for the final out of the 2015 World Series against the Mets.

Doug Padilla ESPN Staff Writer

The Dodgers have seven OFs in the fold, which helps explain why Andrew McCutchen rumors have subsided. "It's hard to imagine bringing in an outfielder and not have an outfielder (on the current roster) be a part of something," president of baseball ops Andrew Friedman said. "But sometimes timing doesn't line up perfectly either. It's not something we're intensely focused on."

Cubs' free agent class after the 2017 season: Wade Davis; Jake Arrieta; John Lackey; Pedro Strop; Brian Duensing; Miguel Montero; Jon Jay.

ESPN Stats and Information

Wade Davis (traded from the Royals to the Cubs) owns the lowest ERA in MLB history as a reliever (1.51) among all pitchers with at least 250 career innings in relief. He is the only pitcher in MLB history to have multiple seasons with at least 50 IP and an ERA of 1.00 or lower (2014 and 2015).

Tristan H. Cockcroft ESPN Senior Writer

If you're curious about Kelvin Herrera's fantasy value as the Royals' new closer, consider that in the 45 Royals games in 2016 in which Wade Davis was on the DL, Herrera had a 2.95 ERA, 0.87 WHIP and was 11-for-11 converting save chances. That's a 40-save pace over a 162-game schedule.

Jesse Rogers ESPN Staff Writer

The Cubs have a new closer in Wade Davis as they traded Jorge Soler to the Royals on Wednesday. The move means Hector Rondon will continue to set up along with Carl Edwards Jr. who emerged late last season. Soler is better suited in the AL where he can DH giving him a better chance to stay healthy while limiting his time on defense. Davis played for Joe Maddon in Tampa Bay.

Tristan H. Cockcroft ESPN Senior Writer

Coors helps greatly alleviate concerns that Ian Desmond's 2016 fantasy numbers will regress, so while he was my No. 108 overall player and OF31 as a free agent, he's now my No. 60 overall and OF19 as a Rockie. Until the team makes other moves, though, I'd wonder: How high in the order does he hit? He might drop a few rankings spots if the Rockies are already done with their lineup.

Cubs win Series, and say Northwestern then makes the NCAA tournament. Biblical Chicago karma tells me Duke will lose title game to DePaul.
