Tony Clark continued to push back on the idea that changes in the last CBA, particularly penalties for exceeding the luxury tax threshold, are to blame for this historic slowdown in free agency. "If you have teams that aren't interested in competing, while also acknowledging that 26-plus of the teams are $20 million or greater under the threshold, it's a difficult argument to make that threshold is what's causing it."

If, as MLBPA chief Tony Clark believes, as many as one-third of teams aren't trying to win this season, would the union consider pushing for a "payroll floor" in the next round of CBA negotiations? "Based on what we are seeing and the extent of what we are seeing being so different than what we have seen in the past, I think everything's worthy of more discussion."

Aaron Boone said today it may be optimistic to expect Thairo Estrada ready for the start of the minor league season. The Yankees infield prospect who's recovering from a gunshot wound to the hip after a robbery attempt in Valenzuela last month, is showing signs of progress, though. He's "graduated to the elliptical" after spending the start of spring training riding exercise bikes, Boone said. "There's no chance we're going to push it too much with him. But I'm still hopeful that this isn't something that is going to cost him the bulk of the season by any means," Boone added.

Outside Steinbrenner Field in Tampa, something I've never noticed before: A memorial to the Twin Towers alongside a small piece of structural steel. Quite literally reflective in the way the Towers were.

Yankees manager Aaron Boone was asked what it meant to wear the Stoneman Douglas High School hat today: "It's huge. Anytime people are hurting, and we know the community is hurting right now, baseball can sometimes play a part with the healing process. And so to honor them and try and have a little bit of thoughts and prayers and our thoughts are with people who are hurting, it's something small that it was cool to be a part of."
