The Yankees, down 8-1 after 7 innings, fought back to bring the tying run to the plate in each of the last two innings, but PH Mark Teixeira grounded out to end the right hand Starlin Castro, who barely missed a three-run HR in the 8th, struck out to end the game with two men on. The Yankees lose, 8-5, to the Royals and more importantly, lose a chance to make up a game on three of the teams they were chasing in the AL wild card race.

Travis Shaw interrupted his second-half slump by getting three hits Monday night. But the biggest reason the slumping Red Sox third baseman likely will be in the lineup Tuesday night is that the Rays are starting another right-handed pitcher. Shaw has been sitting against lefties after playing every day for much of the season. "It's hard. You feel like you've got to get a hit to get back in the lineup the next day," Shaw said. "I've got to try to stop pressing."

Tigers CF Cameron Maybin will undergo an MRI on Tuesday, according to manager Brad Ausmus. He left Monday's game with an injury to his already-injured left thumb. The team is working under the assumption now that it is a "contusion" but will know more about the severity of the injury once the test results return. Said Ian Kinsler: "Hopefully we can get him back in the lineup soon; the sooner, the better."

Kipnis, Indians walk off with a win
