Before the game today the book Outliers came up with Joe Maddon in regards to birthdays, which led him to tell reporters what he likes to do during games; "I watch the scoreboard all the time for birthdays. I try to remember where I was on that date. I play that game with all the birthdays."

In the third inning at Fenway, Aaron Judge just plowed into the second row of the seats along the right field line, make an outstanding catch. The 6-foot-7, 282 pound Judge was not hurt. As for the seats, they appear to be day-to-day.

From the file of things you didn't expect to see in 2017: The Giants have purchased the contract of Mike Morse, who had just eight PAs in 2016 and didn't hit much in 2015 AND he's a lousy fielder. But the Giants are desperately seeking outfielders and Morse will be their 10th one already in April. Chances are we'll soon see No. 11.

Joe Maddon had a thought regarding former Cub Chris Coghlan's acrobatic slide at home plate last night: "That's otherworldly right there. That's something you see Bo Jackson or Dick Fosbury (do). That also, I think, is a residual of the blocking home plate rule. He could have run him over but internally probably felt like he couldn't, instead putting himself at risk by landing on his head. I want to make a point of that also." Maddon is not a fan of the rule.

The White Sox finished off a three-game sweep of the struggling Royals with a 5-2 win at Guaranteed Rate Field on Tuesday afternoon. Jose Quintana struck out 10 over six innings, including a career-best seven during his first three frames. Red-hot Avisail Garica continued his torrid start with his fourth homer. Chicago now heads to Detroit for a weekend series. Depending on the Detroit-Seattle game later, the teams could enter the series deadlocked for first atop the AL Central. Meanwhile, the Royals have dropped seven straight and have scored two or fewer runs in nine of their last 10 games.

Reason for Dustin Pedroia sitting out tonight is two-fold: Woke up sore after working out yesterday and wet grounds, according to Red Sox manager John Farrell.

ESPN Stats and Information

Felix Hernández made 30 starts each season from 2006 to 2015. His 322 starts in that span trailed only the 327 of Dan Haren. Lately, Hernández hasn't been up to his 2010 Cy Young Award-winning form. His strikeouts per nine innings dropped from 8.5 from 2005 to 2015 to 7.2 the last two seasons, and his WHIP has increased from 1.17 to 1.36.

The Cubs flip flopped Kyle Hendricks and Brett Anderson in the rotation so Hendricks will pitch Sunday night in Boston while Anderson will start the home stand against the Phillies on Monday. It gets another lefty into the Philadelphia series.

Just when it appeared that the White Sox have their offense rolling, they may have lost their clean-up hitter. Jose Abreu slipped while he was trying to retrieve an errant grounder and immediately grabbed at his hamstring. He limped off the field, mostly off his own power. Hopefully it's not serious.

Dustin Pedroia is absent from Red Sox's lineup one day after manager John Farrell said the second baseman would've played if not for a rainout. Pedroia has been dealing with a sore left knee and ankle since he was spiked by Orioles' Manny Machado on Friday night in Baltimore. Pedroia didn't play Saturday or Sunday.

Take a good pitcher trying to rediscover himself and an opponent struggling horrifically at the plate, and this is what you get: The White Sox's Jose Quintana has struck out seven Royals over his first three innings, the most he's ever punched out over the first three frames of an outing. Chicago leads 2-0.
