As another day passes without J.D. Martinez's contract being finalized, it isn't unusual for free-agent deals to be held up for days or even weeks by lengthy medical reviews and/or changes in contract language based on concerns over a potential future injury. The Red Sox went through such situations with J.D. Drew (also a Scott Boras client) and John Lackey. In 2013, the Sox completely re-worked a deal with Mike Napoli after the physical revealed a hip condition.

Clint Frazier firmly told reporters his "eyes are set on opening day. I'm here to want a spot ... in my mind, I'm breaking (spring) with the team. That's my goal, and that's the vision I have for myself." He isn't worried how the stacked OF competition will shake out. "I've been up (on MLB club) before, and I know people know I can play up there."

Following the Yankees' 4-1 win over the Pirates, Clint Frazier and Aaron Boone spoke about the 2nd-inning fly ball Frazier drifted on, then leapt for and caught on the warning track. Boone, smirking: "I was thinking, ‘Get back there, man. Get behind that thing a little bit.'" Frazier said the wind carried the ball today. "I've just got to make it look a little easier from here on out. That way I can have some people trust in me when the ball's hit to me."

Jackie Bradley Jr.'s OPS by month last season: .596, .808, 1.009, .596, .770, .517. On his reputation as a "streaky" hitter: "I feel like I haven't played my best baseball yet. I don't like to feed into that so-called streaky thing. I know what I'm capable of doing and it's just getting back to doing that on a consistent basis."

Shohei Ohtani left the mound to a warm ovation from Angels fans after his pitching debut. He threw 31 pitches — 17 strikes — in 1 1/3 innings against the Brewers. Jonathan Villar led off the game with a long double, and Keon Broxton smoked a home run to left field leading off the second. Ohtani had trouble commanding his fastball and buried several breaking balls in the dirt. He'll have plenty of time to work out his issues over the next few weeks in Arizona.

Brandon Drury says the 93 mph fastball that hit him caught him on the top of his left hand. He iced it when he came out the next inning. It feels fine now and doesn't require X-rays.

Hall of Famer Vladimir Guerrero threw out the ceremonial first pitch at today's Angels-Brewers game. A few minutes later, Shohei Ohtani took the mound with Norman Greenbaum's "Spirit in the Sky" playing over the Tempe Diablo Stadium loudspeaker. His first Cactus League pitch: A ball to Brewers shortstop Jonathan Villar, who worked the count to 3-1 before lining a double to deep center field.

Here's an Estevan Florial triple in the gap in case you like those kinds of things:

Michael Feliz, now with the Pirates, is an intriguing breakout candidate in the bullpen. Just looked good striking out the side -- Miguel Andujar, Tyler Austin and Clint Frazier, all swinging. He has 172 K's in 121 career innings, so we know the stuff is there.

Third baseman Brandon Drury's time with the Yankees begins with a sharp single to left field.

Miguel Andujar was hitting some bombs in BP. A lot of power potential in that swing if everything comes together.

Tony Clark continued to push back on the idea that changes in the last CBA, particularly penalties for exceeding the luxury tax threshold, are to blame for this historic slowdown in free agency. "If you have teams that aren't interested in competing, while also acknowledging that 26-plus of the teams are $20 million or greater under the threshold, it's a difficult argument to make that threshold is what's causing it."

Scott Lauber ESPN Staff Writer

If, as MLBPA chief Tony Clark believes, as many as one-third of teams aren't trying to win this season, would the union consider pushing for a "payroll floor" in the next round of CBA negotiations? "Based on what we are seeing and the extent of what we are seeing being so different than what we have seen in the past, I think everything's worthy of more discussion."

Ben Zobrist (back) says he's a few days from full activity. He hasn't participated in any drills yet after his back tightened up about a week before camp opened. He says he's not worried and believes he'll get plenty of spring AB's before the reg season begins.
