Like Anthony Rizzo before him Willson Contreras hit a lead off home run in his very first at-bat leading off a game in his career. He took Gio Gonzalez deep on a 3-1 pitch to start the game making him the 3rd different Cub to hit a lead off HR this season.

Brendan Rodgers will hit second and play shortstop in his home debut for Hartford tonight. He will try to bring a spark to a Yard Goats lineup that has struggled to produce consistently.

According to ESPN Stats and Information, the avg age of the Cubs starting lineup tonight is 24.8. That's the youngest for any team's lineup in Major League Baseball this year and youngest since July 4 last season when the Cubs fielded a starting nine with an avg age of 24.4.

Carmine Carcieri ESPN

Rodgers' teammates have told him that Hartford's new park, Dunkin' Donuts Park, is the "best place to play at" with the "best fans." During his pregame availability, Rodgers also said he will work on his defense for the rest of the season as he gets reps at both SS and 2B.

After hitting .400 at the Advanced A level, Rockies top prospect and former No. 3 overall pick in the 2015 MLB draft, Brendan Rodgers, is making his fifth appearance with Double-A Hartford on Monday. Rodgers was called up to the Yard Goats this past week.

Dusty Baker on the impact of possibly adding reliever Francisco Rodriguez, who's reportedly in talks with the Nats: "Depends if he's the same K-Rod. I'd take Sandy Koufax, but he might not be the same Sandy Koufax."

Jesse Rogers ESPN Staff Writer

Joe Maddon is at it again. He has catcher Willson Contreras leading off on Monday against the Nationals followed by Anthony Rizzo and Kris Bryant. Rookies Ian Happ, Jeimer Candelario and Mark Zagunis are also starting, along with Albert Almora Jr. It's the first time in the last 12 games, in which he's played, Rizzo won't lead off.

Andrew Marchand ESPN Senior Writer

The Yankees have made some DL moves. Jacoby Ellsbury (concussion) is back, while Aaron Hicks (oblique) has been placed on the DL. Hicks could be about 3 or 4 weeks.

David Schoenfield ESPN Senior Writer

The Cardinals take the final game of the series against the Pirates, but they're still just 13-25 over their past 28 games. One thing they need is more bullpen efforts like Sunday night's, as four relievers combined for one hit over three scoreless innings. The Cards have seven losses when leading entering the seventh inning -- and now they're 4-7 when tied thanks to a four-run seventh.

David Schoenfield ESPN Senior Writer

We know starters aren't necessarily expected to go deep into games, but Chad Kuhl's record this season is a little ridiculous. This is now 12 starts in a row he hasn't gone more than five innings. Can you keep a guy like that in rotation? This is somewhat by design as the Pirates haven't let him throw 100 pitches in a game all season, but it sure taxes the bullpen.

David Schoenfield ESPN Senior Writer

The Pirates counter with three runs off Mike Leake in the third to take a 3-2 lead. Leake allowed more than two runs just once in his first nine starts, but entered this game with a 5.28 ERA his previous five starts. The difference? His BABIP increased from .239 (probably a little lucky) to .322 (the balls in play were finding holes).

David Schoenfield ESPN Senior Writer

Chad Kuhl is throwing 98 mph for the Pirates, but the Cardinals are sitting on the fastball and Greg Garcia -- who was 2-for-29 in June -- just lined a two-run single with the bases loaded to give the Cardinals the early lead in the second inning.

David Schoenfield ESPN Senior Writer

The Rockies-Dodgers game just turned into one of the strangest and ugliest of the season (well, at least if you're a Rockies fan). At one point over the seventh and eighth innings, the Dodgers scored five straight runs on four wild pitches by Adam Ottavino. That's never happened before. Then, with a 12-6 lead in the ninth, Kenley Jansen issued his first walk of the season after 51 strikeouts. You can't predict baseball!

Guillermo Celis ESPN

Aledmys Díaz celebra su excelente jugada a la defensiva. #PinceladaDefensiva con sabor cubano del SS de St. Louis.

David Schoenfield ESPN Senior Writer

One of the things to look for in tonight's Pirates-Cardinals game is former MVP Andrew McCutchen, who has looked revitalized since moving to the sixth spot in the lineup on May 26. It probably doesn't have anything to do with where's he's hitting, but since moving down he's hitting .385 with a 1.187 OPS and eight home runs in 27 games.

ESPN Stats and Information

According to Statcast, Gary Sánchez struck out on a pitch that was 2.26 feet from the center of home plate, the farthest from home plate for a pitch he has struck out on in his 100-game MLB career.
