The odds may not be great but it's not over yet. The Mariners beat Oakland 3-2 to stay two games behind Baltimore and Toronto in the wild card race with three games to play. Jays and O's also playing tough opponents (Red Sox and Yankees) while Seattle playing Oakland.

David Ortiz's farewell to Yankee Stadium

Ortiz received numerous standing ovations from the Yankee Stadium crowd, including when he was removed from the game after drawing a walk in his final at-bat in the Bronx.

Cards walk off in controversial fashion

Reds manager Bryan Price's attempt to challenge whether Yadier Molina's game-winning double should have been a ground-rule double -- which would have kept the winning run at third -- is too late, as the Cardinals win a crucial game.

Mets and Cardinals fans need not worry. Dodgers manager Dave Roberts said his club plans on playing the Giants hard this weekend with playoff implications present. At question, though, would be how long starters Clayton Kershaw and Rich Hill are extended in their outings.

With 10 strikeouts so far through six innings, Johnny Cueto becomes the third straight Giants starter to record 10+ K's -- the first time they've done that since 1975. More importantly, the game is 2-2. Win, and the Giants remain a game up on the Cardinals; lose and they're tied as the Dodgers come to San Fran for the final series.

Nothing but respect. The Yankees put the rivalry aside to toast Big Papi in his Bronx farewell:

Mariners tied 1-1 with Oakland in sixth inning of pretty much a must-win game. After Baltimore beat Toronto, Seattle is currently down 2 1/2 games in wild card race and a loss tonight would mean they would have to go 3-0 and hope Blue Jays or O's go 0-3 rest of way to tie. Oh, and Tigers would have to lose some as well.

Potential Dodgers playoff starter Julio Urias tuned up for the postseason Thursday with three scoreless innings at San Diego on 58 pitches. The 20-year-old lefty could be called upon to pitch Game 4 of the NLDS against the Nationals.

Jimenez leads Orioless to tie atop wild-card standings

Ubaldo Jimenez strikes out five in 6.2 scoreless innings in the Orioles' 4-0 win over the Blue Jays. Baltimore and Toronto are now tied atop the AL wild-card standings.

Of all parting gifts David Ortiz got, Red Sox teammate Jackie Bradley Jr. was most impressed by book of letters from past/present Yankees. Bradley: "You could really tell that they put a lot of thought into that. I mean this in the most respectful way: It might not have been the most expensive gift he's gotten, but I felt like it meant the most. From my standpoint, there couldn't have been a more special gift than that. All those people that was in that book, and we only saw a few of the pages, I can only imagine."

David Ortiz on getting a mostly standing ovation at Yankee Stadium: "It seems like everybody was happy that I'm leaving."

The suspended Cubs-Pirates game has been declared a 1-1 tie by MLB. The ViewFromVegas is a straight bet is official after 5 innings (4.5 if home team leading), so money-line bets on both teams are refunds. The run line (where the favorite is -1.5 runs and the underdog is +1.5) and over/unders must go 9 innings (8.5 if home team leading) to be official for betting purposes, so those are no-action and also refunded. There was a 5-inning line on the game and that was also tied 1-1, so that's another refund, BUT the 5-inning over/under of 4 runs ended up being the only valid game wager as the under cashes.

Red Sox skipper John Farrell said the Yankees' gift to David Ortiz -- a leather-bound book full of personal notes -- "might be the most meaningful" of the year. "A touch of class."
