Kyle Schwarber praised Javy Baez for his work ethic after the latter player became the third since the all-star game began being played in 1933 to have at least 19 HR, 71 RBI and 18 SB prior to the break: "People see the flash and people see the style. In here, we see the toughness and the grit. That's something that he brings to all of us."

Watch Javy Baez discuss playing despite not feeling well on Saturday. He didn't want to sit out because the Cubs were already missing Albert Almora Jr (Bert) due to a family matter. Baez hit his 19th home run while driving in 5 in the Cubs 11-6 win.

The Cubs assured themselves of being alone in first place at the all-star break with an 11-6 win over the Padres on Saturday, giving them a 1.5 game lead on the Brewers with one more to play for both teams. Javy Baez continued the best half of his career hitting his 19th home run while driving in 5 for a total of 71 RBI. That's tied for tops in the NL.

Dodgers manager Dave Roberts, on what has allowed Chase Utley to excel as a pinch-hitter: "I think one thing is the buy-in and understanding his role. The other part of it is just the preparation. Every time he steps in the box, he's prepared to hit, and he knows how to approach that particular pitcher."

Cardinals manager Mike Matheny has been fired with his club at 47-46 and in danger of missing the postseason a third straight year, their worst stretch since missing the playoffs from 1997-1999. He leaves with a career .555 record, one NL pennant, and perhaps more than the usual second-guessing from fans. Also out, hitting coach John Mabry and assistant hitting coach Bill Mueller.

A potential trade candidate for the Angels, if they decide to sell, might be Jose Alvarez, the lefty reliever who recorded the final four outs of a 5-4 win from Dodger Stadium. His ERA is down to 2.66.

Kole Calhoun hit his third home run in two nights, giving the Angels a 5-4 lead in the 10th. In 50 games before his recent DL stint, Calhoun had a 145/195/179 slash line with 1 HR. In 24 games since: 288/333/638 and 9 HR.

Aaron Boone joked that he watched every TV in the Yankees' clubhouse trying to watch the end of tonight's game. Was also unaware of the colorful language he used before his ejection. He said he did see it appeared the umpires got the call correct. He initially thought the ball hit Giancarlo Stanton's hand and bat, causing the ball to be fouled back on the swing.

Joc Pederson came within about five feet of a walk-off grand slam. Instead, they will go to extras at Dodger Stadium. Kenley Jansen will pitch the 10th, and Kenta Maeda might be available if the Dodgers are in a pinch in later innings.
