Cubs starter Yu Darvish moved closer to a return from tendinitis in his right triceps after throwing a simulated game at Wrigley Field before Wednesday's game against the Dodgers. Both Maddon and Darvish said the outing went as well as could have been expected and he was able to work on all of his pitches. He will be re-evaluated on Thursday before a next step is established but it could be a rehab start, of which Darvish said he likely would only need one before he returns to the Chicago rotation.

The Cubs have placed closer Brandon Morrow on the disabled list because of back tightness. Morrow hurt himself while taking off his pants which, on the surface, sounds kind of amusing but is the kind of frustrating back-related tweak that many of us can identify with. The move is retroactive to Sunday. Reliever Justin Hancock, added as the 26th man for Tuesday's doubleheader, will remain on the big league roster.

Mike Scioscia on maximizing Mike Trout's chances to hit with men on base (81 players have more plate appearances with RISP this season): "If we had another Mike to put in front of Mike, we'd be OK." He's used that one before.

Mike Trout, on getting pitched around: "I'm just looking for my pitch. If it's not there, I'm taking my walks. For me, if I try to expand the strike zone, that's when I get in trouble."

Angels RF Kole Calhoun, on Mike Trout: "This is not an easy game, and this guy makes it look easier and easier every year. It's a special talent that we're not going to see too many times, so enjoy it now."

The Angels win (5-4 over the D-backs) for only the second time in their last nine games. Mike Trout reached base every time he came to bat and is OPS'ing a Major League-best 1.158.

Even when Mike Trout makes an out, he doesn't. He hit a one-hopper to the second baseman, but the D-backs were called for catcher's interference. He has still made only 7 outs in his last 36 plate appearances.

That home run had to feel really good for Kole Calhoun. It's his first since Opening Day. He came in with a 153/202/188 slash line and had completely altered his batting stance, with a heavier crouch and lower hands. He told me last night that's basically the position he ends up in after his load; he's just starting there now to simplify the approach and eliminate excess movement. "You gotta change something when you're hitting .145," he said.

Correcting an earlier post: Over his last 8 games, Mike Trout has reached base in 27 of his last 36 plate appearances. Even more impressive: He has reached base safely in 22 of his last 27 plate appearances, per the Angels' PR staff.
