Red Sox owner John Henry and other team officials will meet with David Ortiz next week in Dominican Republic to discuss a post-playing role in organization.
It makes sense, owner John Henry said, for Red Sox to stay below $195 million CBT threshold this year because doing so will reset the penalties, according to terms of new collective bargaining agreement.
World Series pick for this year: Cubs and Indians meet, again. This time, Cleveland wins.
St. Petersburg's City Council approved a smokeless tobacco ban at athletic facilities that would make the Tampa Bay Rays' ballpark the 13th of 30 in MLB to have such a prohibition. The city clerk told Outside the Lines that the new law passed Thursday without opposition.
On Thursday, the Marlins obtained pitcher Dan Straily from the Reds for a package of minor leaguers. Straily had his best season in 2016, posting a 3.76 ERA. However, he allowed 31 home runs, which tied with Max Scherzer for most in the NL. He also had a 4.88 FIP. The differential between his ERA and FIP (which technically comes out to 1.11 not 1.12) was 2nd-highest among ERA-title qualifiers. Only former teammate Brandon Finnegan (1.21) had a bigger difference.
Does Red Sox star Mookie Betts see himself as a team leader? "I'm only 24, so it's kind of hard to tell some 30-year-old man, 'Let's go,'" he said before Boston Baseball Writers' Dinner. "I try to lead by example."
Orioles OF/DH Mark Trumbo hit an AL-best 47 HR last season, but finished with only 1.6 Wins Above Replacement.
The Orioles have reportedly agreed to a deal with Mark Trumbo on a 3-year contract. Trumbo had career highs in home runs (47), RBI (108), hits (157) and OPS (.850) last season.
The Nationals offered approximately $85m to Kenley Jansen before he turned them down. They traded three good prospects for Adam Eaton who will be cost effective for 4yrs. Now it's hard to believe they won't spend part of that $85m saved from Jansen to land both Free Agents Greg Holland and Matt Wieters. Both would put them over the top.
With Mark Trumbo off the board and the Orioles no longer in need for a power hitter, this clearly opens the door for a return to Texas for Mike Napoli who is now on the clock.
I just confirmed by both sides that Mark Trumbo and the Orioles have agreed on a 3-year deal worth 37.5m with deferrals. However, like all Orioles free agents signings he will have to go through a Navy Seal type physical which means on this one we all need to wait to make sure they actually pass him.
5'8" Tim Raines said his idol, 5'7" Joe Morgan, inspired him as a young athlete to give up football for baseball when the Reds' second-baseman won two straight MVP awards. Until receiving a congratulatory call Wednesday, Raines said they hadn't been in touch for a few years and he was concerned about Morgan's health. "Just to hear his voice made this day so much more special."
One of the three new members of the 2017 MLB Hall of Fame Class, Iván "Pudge" Rodríguez, alongside his son, Iván Derek Rodríguez.
Speaking before Boston Baseball Writers' Dinner, Terry Francona said Theo Epstein visited him after Cubs' Game 7 celebration. "He's in a suit and smells like champagne, yet he was comfortable enough to come over. I thought that was really, really nice of him."

Pudge Rodriguez just gave a roundabout non-answer when Ron Blum of the Associated Press asked him about possible PED use during his career. Rodriguez attributed his success over 21 years to hard work. He declined to elaborate beyond that.
Asked to address whether he used PEDs, Pudge Rodriguez said at Thursday's Hall of Fame news conference, "No, I didn't." The only catcher other than Johnny Bench to receive first ballot election said, "I worked very hard for 21 years," adding, "I played the game the right way."
Tim Raines received a call from his baseball idol, Joe Morgan, upon making the Hall of Fame Wednesday. "To have him call made the day that much more special,"" Raines said.
