The Cubs sent Rule 5 pick lefty Caleb Smith back to the Yankees today. With a healthy staff Smith became expendable. It means Brian Duensing and Mike Montgomery are the lefties in the bullpen to start the season. The Cubs also assigned Chris Dominguez and Jemile Weeks to minor league camp. Their roster stands at 27 as they'll likely carry an extra catcher (Corporan) until the weekend while a decision on Matt Szczur has to be made soon. He's out of minor league options.

Even after being assigned to minor league camp Cubs 2015 top pick Ian Happ continues to hit. He went 2 for 2 with 2 RBI against the Giants on Tuesday raising his spring average to .415 and OPS to 1.286. The Cubs have not ruled out a 2017 debut for Happ.

Josh Rutledge's strained left hamstring might open roster spot for infielder Marco Hernandez, but it would also leave Red Sox without a righty-hitting platoon partner for first baseman Mitch Moreland. Hanley Ramirez, by the way, played light catch from 90 feet again today.

Everyone's different, of course, but to get idea of Tyler Thornburg's timetable in return from shoulder impingement, consider reliever Junichi Tazawa, who missed 18 days with similar issue last season. Joe Kelly, a starter when he dealt with impinged shoulder last April, missed a month.

Solid showing of opposite-field power there by Matt Adams, who homered to left-center off Robert Gsellman. It was Adams' fifth spring homer and he entered today batting .302 (albeit with 18 K's). I do hope the Cardinals find a way to sneak him into 300-plus PAs, because he's still got awfully underrated power potential despite the tough home ballpark for it.
