Nationals sign Oliver Perez

Oliver Perez has signed a minor league contract with the Washington Nationals, a pro-rated minimum deal.

Perez, a left-hander, has a longstanding relationship with Nationals pitching coordinator Spin Williams. Williams used to be Perez's pitching coach with the Pittsburgh Pirates.

Agent Scott Boras confirmed the deal Wednesday to The Associated Press. If Perez makes the Nationals, they will be responsible
for only $414,000.

Perez was released by the New York Mets on Monday with $12 million remaining on his $36 million, three-year contract.
