PEORIA, Ariz. -- Milwaukee will have a familiar face on the mound Opening Day.
The Brewers announced Thursday that right-hander Yovani Gallardo will start his fifth consecutive season opener March 31 against Atlanta. Gallardo will set a Brewers record for starts in consecutive openers and pull within one of Milwaukee's overall mark, held by Ben Sheets.
"I'm not surprised at all," right-hander Marco Estrada said. "If he's the guy, he's the guy, and we've got four other guys that can probably do it, also. It could have been anybody, but I'm glad it's him."
Entering his eighth season, Gallardo, 28, went 12-10 with a 4.18 ERA in 2013. So far this spring, he has allowed one run and six hits in eight innings. He has struck out eight.
