Pirates claim John Axford

The Pittsburgh Pirates made a move to strengthen their bullpen for the stretch run, acquiring right-handed reliever John Axford from the Cleveland Indians in a straight waiver claim, a source told ESPN's Buster Olney.

He is owed approximately $1.1 million for the remainder of the season.

Axford began the season as the Indians' closer but was removed from the job in May after starting 1-3 with nine saves and a 4.91 ERA in 17 games.

Overall, he has a 3.92 ERA and 10 saves in 43 2/3 innings this season with 51 strikeouts and 30 walks.

Axford was signed to a one-year, $4.5 million contract as a free agent in December after pitching for Milwaukee and St. Louis last season. The one-time Brewers closer had 105 saves from 2010 to 2012, and he converted 49 straight save chances during one stretch.
