Justin Upton suffers right wrist contusion

Detroit Tigers outfielder Justin Upton is day to day after suffering a right wrist contusion in a 5-1 loss to the Tampa Bay Rays on Tuesday.

Upton got tangled up with Rays shortstop Tim Beckham on a slide at second base in the seventh inning, with his wrist apparently colliding with Beckham's forearm. Upton also made a sliding catch over the bullpen mound in the bottom of the sixth.

The Tigers initially feared the injury might be more serious, but X-rays were negative. Upton will be evaluated again on Wednesday.

"At the time when they were looking at his wrist in the dugout, he was reacting like there was a lot of pain," Tigers manager Brad Ausmus told reporters after the game. "I was actually concerned that it might be a break, the way he was reacting."
