Cardinals release Jhonny Peralta

The St. Louis Cardinals have given veteran third baseman Jhonny Peralta his unconditional release, the team announced Tuesday.

Peralta, in the final year of his contract, was batting .204 with no RBIs or extra-base hits in 54 at-bats this season.

In other moves, the Cardinals recalled pitcher Sam Tuivailala from Triple-A Memphis. The right-hander (2-1, 3.27 ERA) will be making is fourth stint with the Cards this season. In addition, left-handed pitcher Marco Gonzales was tabbed as the team's 26th man, and he will start Game 2 of Tuesday's doubleheader vs. Milwaukee.
