Nate Schierholtz on 15-day DL

SAN FRANCISCO -- The San Francisco Giants placed outfielder Nate Schierholtz on the 15-day disabled list to make room for left-hander Eric Surkamp, who made his major league debut against the Houston Astros on Saturday night.

The Giants designated left-handed pitcher Clayton Tanner for assignment to make room for Surkamp on the 40-man roster.

Schierholtz, who expected the move, tested his fractured right foot Friday and was still too sore to play. He fouled a pitch from Atlanta's Tim Hudson off his foot in the series opener with the Braves on Aug. 15.

Schierholtz played through it, then had an MRI during Monday's off day. A CT scan followed to confirm the fracture.

"It was time to bite the bullet on him," Giants manager Bruce Bochy said. "He just wasn't getting much better."
