Mariners agree with Kelly Shoppach

Free agent catcher Kelly Shoppach has reached an agreement with the Seattle Mariners on a one-year contract pending a physical exam, a baseball source told ESPN.com.

The deal will pay Shoppach a base salary of $1.5 million with an opportunity to earn an additional $500,000 in incentives, the source said.

Shoppach, 32, is a .226 career hitter with 67 home runs in parts of eight seasons with Boston, Cleveland, Tampa Bay and the New York Mets. He will be reunited in Seattle with Eric Wedge, his former manager in Cleveland from 2006-09.

Jesus Montero is Seattle's incumbent starting catcher. The Mariners recently sent his backup, John Jaso, to Oakland in a three-way trade that brought Michael Morse from Washington to Seattle.
