BALTIMORE -- Brian Roberts was activated from the disabled list Sunday by the Baltimore Orioles, who hope to the oft-injured second baseman can contribute to the team's bid to reach the playoffs for a second straight season.
The 35-year-old Roberts had been on the DL since April 5 with a strained right hamstring. He played in three games before the injury.
The two-time All-Star returned for the conclusion of a three-game series against the AL East-rival New York Yankees.
"I'm excited, obviously," he said before batting practice. "It should be a great atmosphere. It has been all year and this weekend. I'm looking forward to being back and being part of it."
Roberts batted ninth as Baltimore's designated hitter.
Roberts has been slowed by injuries over the past four seasons. He played in only 59 games with Baltimore in 2010, 39 in 2011 and 17 last year. With that in mind, Roberts made no promises about staying healthy through October.
"I don't look past today," he said. "I've learned enough in my career to realize that I'm going to enjoy today, I'm going to play hard today. It's not in my hands to say I will be out there every single inning for the rest of the year. None of us have control over that."
Roberts has spent more time rehabilitating injuries than playing baseball over the past several years, but he never let it get him down.
"I believe God has a purpose for everything that I've been through," he said. "There have been many days where you're wondering, am I still supposed to be doing this, or can I still do this, or is it still worth it to do this? But I felt like that's never been my personality, to quit until I felt it was really, really time to do that. I haven't felt that yet."
To make room for Roberts, the Orioles designated right-hander Jair Jurrjens for assignment. Jurrjens was recalled from Triple-A Norfolk on Saturday and pitched 2 1/3 scoreless innings against the Yankees.
In another move Sunday, Baltimore obtained outfielder Eric Thames from Seattle for minor league infielder Ty Kelly. Thames is currently on the DL list with a broken hand.
