Hyde: 'A lot of jobs to be won' as camp opens

Coming off a franchise-worst 115 losses in 2018, first-year Orioles manager Brandon Hyde said Wednesday that there are several spots in the starting rotation and the lineup available as the team began workouts.

They were baseball integration pioneers with the same last name. Frank died Thu. at 83, a week after the centennial of Jackie Robinson's birth. JR's widow, Rachel, and daughter, Sharon, said in a statement: "Frank Robinson was a dear friend and realized one of Jack's great hopes, becoming baseball's first African American manager. He was remarkable and made us all feel proud for his many contributions to baseball and to society. Our hearts go out to Barbara, Nichelle and the family."

Hall of Famer Frank Robinson, who died Thu. at 83, was one of several future MLB stars who played on Oakland, CA youth teams sponsored by Sam Bercovich & his furniture business. Curt Flood, Vada Pinson & Tommy Harper were others. Robinson once said of Bercovich, "He took the knife out of my hand and put a baseball bat in it instead."
