Thursday's longest home runs

Robinson Cano's ninth-inning blast -- the 300th HR of his career -- for the Mariners in their 4-2 loss to the Rangers was the longest shot of Thursday night, edging out Reds OF Scott Schebler, who homered twice in Cincy's loss to the Cardinals.

How to fix the Indians' biggest problem

In part, the Indians' solution to their center-field problem is just being themselves. Their strikeout-heavy pitching staff helps to make a minor weakness come off as an awfully minor problem.

Francisco Lindor's three-run homer -- his 32nd -- was the big blow as the Indians won for their 27th time in 28 games. With his power numbers and solid defense, Lindor is starting to get some MVP talk. He's hit .349 with 11 HRs and 27 RBIs in this stretch, so I understand why. But the entire season counts. Jose Ramirez has an OBP 30 points higher and slugging percentage 64 points higher with good defensive metrics at two positions. Ramirez is still the best MVP candidate on the Indians.

The Indians held on for a 6-5 win over the Angels and now they're back on a four-game winning streak. I'll do the math for you: That's 26-1 over their past 27 games. They haven't lost a road game since August 20. Francisco Lindor is on a tear, slamming his 31st home run. Jason Kipnis is trying out center field and had two hits. Jose Ramirez hit his MLB-leading 51st double. Now, about the Browns ...

Hall-of-Famer Rod Carew catches up with Tito Francona. Carew, who survived a massive heart attack in 2015 and received a heart transplant, wanted to check up on Francona, who underwent a cardiac procedure for an irregular heartbeat in early July.

One of the fascinating subplots these final 12 days is the Indians trying Jason Kipnis in center field. Terry Francona said on MLB Radio today that they're not going to break up the current lineup of Jose Ramirez at second and Yandy Diaz at third, so they're giving Kipnis time in center, where he played in college. Of course, Kipnis has to get his stroke back and while it seems risky, this is the team that played Carlos Santana in left field in the World Series.

I have talked to or texted with a lot of the Puerto Rican players in MLB, and a lot of them have not heard from their families regarding the impact of Hurricane Maria. This morning, Hurricane Maria became the first category 4 hurricane to make landfall in Puerto Rico since the 1920's. After the direct hit, most of the island is without power and communication is very limited.

Red-hot Indians stand in Angels' way

L.A. has a chance to catch Minnesota for the AL's final wild-card spot, but beating Cleveland is far easier said than done. The Indians have won three straight since their 22-game win streak was broken, posting the best 26-game stretch in AL history, per the Elias Sports Bureau.

Indians roll on, beat Angels 6-3 for 25th win in 26 games

Jay Bruce had a triple and a double among his three hits, Austin Jackson singled four times and the incredible Cleveland Indians rolled on by beating the Los Angeles Angels 6-3 Tuesday night for their 25th victory in 26 games.

Yes, that's Carlos Santana kissing Francona's bald head for good luck before the game. Santana does a series of handshakes with each one of his teammates as part of his pregame routine, which he finishes by kissing Tito's head.
