The evolution of Clayton Kershaw

The best pitcher on the planet has cemented his place by adding just enough to stay ahead of the rest. What new wrinkle will the Dodgers ace find next?

Despite positive early bullpens, the Dodgers will take it slow with starter Hyun-Jin Ryu. The Cactus League schedule starts Saturday, and as of now, Ryu is not scheduled to pitch in a game. "It is kind of contingent on his progress," manager Dave Roberts said.

Dodgers manager Dave Roberts is on board with some, not all, rules changes for baseball. On the new rule for an automatic intentional walk, Roberts says, "If that's the rule, we'll kind of abide." As for a proposal to put a runner on base in extra innings … not so fast. "That doesn't sound too appealing for me .. "

Dodgers 1B Adrian Gonzalez says there is nothing new to report with the inflammation in his right elbow. Added that he plans on playing two spring games with the Dodgers before leaving to join Team Mexico for the WBC.

In Dave Roberts' second ever full-squad speech at spring training, the Dodgers manager's theme Tuesday centered around the unfinished business of falling two victories short of the World Series. "There are definitely a lot of unfulfilled people in that room," Roberts said.

Former Dodgers prospect Franklin Gutierrez sounds motivated about his opportunity to return to the franchise that gave him his start. "I'm back here and glad to be around a group of guys that want to win," he said. "And I want to be a part of it." The expectation is that Gutierrez starts in the outfield when the Dodgers face left-handed pitching.

Dodgers shortstop Corey Seager has no problem with a "World Series or bust" theme this year: "Yeah, that's always got to be the mindset. The goal at the beginning of the year is always to win a World Series, and if you don't, it's a disappointment. Last year was a disappointment. It was a good year but still a disappointment to lose."

The Dodgers officially announce the signing of free agent OF Franklin Gutierrez. Gutierrez has a career .289 batting average and .495 slugging percentage against left-handed pitching. LHP Vidal Nuno was traded Sunday to open a spot on the 40-man roster.

The Dodgers remain encouraged about LHP Hyun-Jin Ryu, who had another positive throwing session Sunday. "Ryu still has a smile on his face about how well he threw," manager Dave Roberts said. "That was exciting. He said he feels good today." Ryu has pitched in just one game the last two years because of shoulder and elbow procedures.

New Dodgers OF Franklin Gutierrez and current manager Dave Roberts were in the same Dodgers spring training camp as players in 2003. Gutierrez was just a top prospect then, but as carved out a solid 11-year career since. "He was a lot lighter back then," Roberts joked, "but always a good athlete, good defender. It's nice that we do have some history."

The Dodgers' first live batting practice pitcher of the spring is ... Clayton Kershaw, of course. Kershaw also cracks the first bat of the spring on the second pitch here.

Why are the Dodgers not like the NBA All-Star Game? Duh. They play better defense. The Dodgers don't have the best range, but they field and throw well. "It's something we take pride in," 3B Justin Turner said. "Not just here but in a lot of sports, defense gets overlooked. It's not the high profile part of the game but it is something that wins championships."
