Twins stabilize wild-card chances

The Twins righted the ship on Thursday with a 12-1 win over the Tigers, as their chance at earning the second wild-card berth jumped with nine games remaining. The Rangers stayed alive with a victory, while the Angels' chances took a big hit with a loss to the Indians.

How to fix the Twins' biggest problem

For teams with shaky rotations, the postseason prescription is always the same: Use the mediocre starters less, and try to get more from the better relievers. Too bad Minnesota no longer has Brandon Kintzler.

Rangers back in the hunt?

The Twins' chances for the second wild-card spot went down slightly after being swept by the Yankees. Combined with a loss by the Angels, the door is now open for the Rangers, who saw their chances nearly double. The Royals aren't out of it just yet either.

The frightful Yankee Stadium episode Wed. in which a little girl was injured by a foul ball calls to mind the ongoing concerns of Mandy Coolbaugh, whose husband Mike -- a minor league first-base coach -- was killed 7/22/07 on a liner that struck him in the neck. She says when she and their two toddler sons attended Mike's games, he insisted that they stay in an area with protective netting and that she advocates extending netting at ballparks.

I have talked to or texted with a lot of the Puerto Rican players in MLB, and a lot of them have not heard from their families regarding the impact of Hurricane Maria. This morning, Hurricane Maria became the first category 4 hurricane to make landfall in Puerto Rico since the 1920's. After the direct hit, most of the island is without power and communication is very limited.

Will Sano return in time for postseason?

Eduardo Escobar has done well filling in for the injured third baseman, as the Twins have had an unlikely offensive surge in his absence.

Can the Twins hold off the Angels?

The Yankees are all but locked into a wild-card spot, while the Twins have a significant advantage over the Angels despite losing four of five. The Rangers' two-game win streak is probably too little, too late, while losing streaks by the Mariners (four games) and Royals (three) have just about sunk them.

Mauer showing signs of his old self

For the first nine years of his career, Joe Mauer was one of the most complete hitters in baseball, taking home the 2009 AL MVP award. Since a concussion ended his 2013 season, he has fallen to merely solid. But this season has been a resurgence for Mauer, as he is hitting .306 with an .810 OPS.
