Mickey Callaway is to be introduced Mon. as the 21st manager in Mets history. Mickey Cochrane, who won a pennant & a W.S. in the first 2 seasons of his 1934-'38 run with the Detroit Tigers, and Mickey Vernon, who led the expansion Washington Senators from 1961-'63, are the only 2 MLB managers with that first name. Cochrane, a Hall of Fame catcher, was a player-mgr for most of his tenure.

The Mets will reportedly name Indians pitching coach Mickey Callaway as manager. In the 3 seasons prior to Callaway's arrival in Cleveland, the Indians ranked 12th in the AL in ERA and 13th in WHIP. But with him, they were the best staff in the American League in just about every way. He'll have an eager young group with which to work. The Mets got 157 starts from pitchers under 30, 3rd-most in MLB in 2017.

Pairing Mickey Callaway with the Mets to manage after his success coaching so many talented starters in Cleveland seems like a brilliant selection aimed at maximizing what should be their greatest strength -- starting pitching. He's a great communicator to boot, with players and media alike.

One day after he interviewed with Red Sox and one day before he meets Mets, praise keeps rolling in for Astros bench coach Alex Cora. "The guy is always bringing something to the table for the younger guys, which is great," Astros DH Carlos Beltran said. "He has good communication with the guys. He's always in the clubhouse getting to know the players, getting to know which buttons he could push on each player to make them go out there and play the game hard."
