Padres GM AJ Preller couldn't talk specifically about the Manny Machado signing because it isn't official, but he did say this: "We showed it last year with Eric Hosmer — there are different ways to do it, different ways to build a club. ... You can wait for some of the young talent that we've built up — it could be three or four years — and then try to hope the right guys are out there at the time. But our thinking as a group is if the pieces that fit for us both in the short term and long term are out there, that's how you build a club. That's how we've approached it the last few years."

I've spoken to quite a few players in the Phillies and Jays camps today after news broke of the Manny Machado signing. The general consensus was that they were elated. One veteran told me: "So glad he got paid! We're the ones who leave it all on the field, and the owners and the league make all the money. We should share!" Not ONE OF THEM mentioned anything about Machado not hustling or being a bad guy. That speaks volumes.

With reports of Manny Machado signing with San Diego, the Westgate SuperBook moved the Padres season win total from 76.5 to 79.5. Their World Series odds also moved from 80-1 to 50-1.

Max Scherzer reacts to Manny Machado's big-money deal with the Padres.

Few players have more talent than Machado (2:03)
Teixeira: Machado had no offers from big-market teams (1:20)
What does Machado's deal mean for Harper? (1:10)

Despite all the consternation, in the end Manny Machado got the contract everyone would have expected at the start of the offseason: 10 years, $300 million. Maybe it's a surprise that it's with the Padres, but they now have a legit superstar to build a lineup around, a 26-year-old who has averaged 5.8 WAR over the past four seasons. The Padres aren't likely contenders in 2019, but with Machado, a great farm system and -- who knows, maybe Bryce Harper -- maybe they'll smell .500 for the first time since 2010.

Manny Machado, a four-time All-Star who had a .297 batting average with 37 home runs, 107 RBIs and a career-high .905 OPS last season, has reached a deal with the Padres, sources told ESPN.

Dan Mullen ESPN.com

With Keith Law's No. 1 farm system making its way to San Diego, the Padres have proven again that they're willing to spend big to surround their future stars with established talent. By adding Manny Machado at $300 million over 10 seasons after signing Eric Hosmer for $144 million last winter, the Padres have spent more on two players than they did in their previous 25 offseasons combined.

Perhaps a key fantasy takeaway: The Padres' offense cannot possibly be regarded as exploitable an SP matchup. Consider: C: Hedges/Mejia 1B: Hosmer 2B: Kinsler 3B: Machado SS: Urias/(Tatis?) LF: Wil Myers CF: Margot RF: Renfroe Franmil Reyes, Cordero, Jankowski in the OF mix.

Manny Machado's fantasy value won't significantly change in San Diego, though Petco Park is still a bottom-half venue for runs and home runs, while Camden Yards was a top-half venue for both. Machado moves to 13th overall, so give me Francisco Lindor again as my SS1.
