Mark Melancon poised for big contract?

Given the increase in value placed on closers, Melancon figures to strike it big as a free agent this offseason. Wilson Ramos also improved his stock this year, but his recent ACL tear drastically reduces his chances at a big deal. Bowden: FA value watch (Insider)

Max Scherzer in select strikeout company

With another 10 K's on Tuesday, Scherzer has had 24 starts with at least 10 strikeouts since the start of the 2015 season. That's the most such starts over a two-season span since 2001-02, when Randy Johnson had 37 starts of this type (22 in '01, 15 in '02) and Curt Schilling had 27 (13 in '01 and 14 in '02), per the Elias Sports Bureau.

No Wilson Ramos, no problem. So far, anyway. In their first game without their All-Star catcher (torn ACL), the Nats beat the Diamondbcks 4-2. The win increases Washington's lead over the Dodgers for 2nd seed in the NL (and homefield advantage in the NLDS) to 1.5 games.

Dodgers set NLDS rotation; Puig earns roster spot

Clayton Kershaw will start Game 1 of the NLDS for the Dodgers, followed by Rich Hill and Kenta Maeda. Yasiel Puig also earned a spot on the playoff roster after an August demotion to Triple-A.

Anthony Rendon, batting cleanup for the Nats in place of, well...pretty much everyone (Harper, Murphy, Ramos), just hit a three-run bomb to give Washington a 4-2 lead over the D-backs in the sixth. Big moment for a banged-up squad that's struggling to stay ahead of the Dodgers for the number two seed in the NL.

Max Scherzer has 10 K's through six innings, That makes 277 on the year, breaking the Nats record he set last year (276). Scherzer is now the only active pitcher with multiple seasons of 275-plus whiffs.
