Carlos Martínez is the 1st Cardinals pitcher to throw at least 9 scoreless innings and NOT get a win since Matt Morris in 2004.

Everybody wins the Matt Adams trade. The Braves needed someone to fill Freddie Freeman's shoes for the next two months-plusat first base, the Cardinals needed the roster spot with Stephen Piscotty due back soon from the DL, and Adams needed to be liberated from the danger of ever starting in left field ever again. He makes a fine temp in Atlanta, and could be a good bench bat for them to flip to a contender after Freeman returns.

Prospects who could push their teams over the top

Yadier Molina isn't being replaced anytime soon, but one of the Cardinals' top prospects is showing at Triple-A that he could make a serious impact as the team's backup catcher.

Red Sox 5, Cardinals 4: It took seven scoreless innings from eight relievers -- and 13 innings overall -- but the Red Sox erased an early four-run deficit and swept the two-game interleague series in St. Louis. Chris Young's two-out pinch single in the 13th drove in Mitch Moreland with the go-ahead run. Jackie Bradley Jr. belted a two-run homer, while Xander Bogaerts tripled twice.

A second-inning single by Cardinals RF Magneuris Sierra on Wednesday night puts the 21-year-old Dominican rookie within one game of tying Redbirds hitting history.

Cardinals right-hander Mike Leake is toying with Boston's lineup and his ERA keeps dropping. It's a bit hard to believe since Leake, while reliable and durable, hasn't finished a season with an ERA better than 3.37. His career mark is 3.92. Fantasy owners should be prepared for this ERA to change - a lot. Leake isn't doing anything different. Still a below-average K rate. His xFIP is similar to last year when his ERA was 4.69. In other words, you're running out of time to sell high.

ESPN Stats and Information

Cardinals CF Dexter Fowler wasted no time, leading off the first inning with a 418-foot home run to right field on Wednesday night vs. the Red Sox.

Tristan H. Cockcroft ESPN Senior Writer

Dexter Fowler's leadoff home run is a promising sign after his early struggles and recent injury issues. Remember, he was batting .288/.358/.593 in his 15 games preceding the shoulder injury that cost him six starts and three total games last week, and he has always been one of the best on-base specialists in baseball — remember their importance in points and sabermetrically angled leagues.
