Maddon: Russell's return wouldn't be distraction

If Addison Russell plays again for the Cubs this season, Chicago manager Joe Maddon said Tuesday that it won't be a distraction for the team. Russell was placed on administrative leave by Major League Baseball last week.

The Cubs extended their own record streak of scoring a single run — all via HR — against an opponent to five games as they lost 5-1 to the Pirates, This time their solo blast came from pitcher Cole Hamels who hit his second career long ball. The Cubs scored one run in all 4 games last time they played Pittsburgh and now open this series doing the same.

Cole Hamels is trending the wrong way in regards to the long ball. Over his first 7 starts as a Cub he didn't give up a single home run. Now he's given up at least one in his last 4 outings, including a first inning blast tonight to Pirates catcher Francisco Cervelli.

After today's game, Kris Bryant reiterated that his shoulder is fine. He indicated recently that he feels a little bit like he's in spring training mode considering how much time he missed being on the DL. He repeated that again today as Joe Maddon gave him the day off as much for that as he did for the shoulder: “I don't want to say I'm feeling something (in his shoulder) . I'm just tired from playing, you know?” Bryant said.

Kyle Schwarber homered and drove in two runs, and the Chicago Cubs beat the crosstown White Sox 6-1 on Sunday to lower their magic number for clinching the NL Central title to five.

The Cubs reduced their magic number to clinch the NL central to 5 behind a 6-1 win over the White Sox. Kyle Hendricks had another strong outing, pitching into the 8th inning before tiring. The Cubs will host Pittsburgh and St. Louis over the next 7 days as they look to clinch their 3rd consecutive division title.

Ben Zobrist is 3 for 3 today so far, raising his batting average to .316 on the season. He said recently he would love to hit over .300 as he's never done it in his career. The closest he came was in 2009 when he hit .297. He's 37 year old.

Kris Bryant won't start on Sunday against lefty Carlos Rodon due to 'fatigue' in his left shoulder. Joe Maddon stressed the shoulder wasn't sore but Bryant is feeling a loss of "strength." It's been a nagging injury for most of the season for the former MVP: "We knew we would have to be proactive about giving him rest. It just so happened he needed it today," Maddon said.

Cubs sit 3B Bryant with shoulder fatigue

Cubs third baseman Kris Bryant was sidelined Sunday for the team's 6-1 win over the White Sox with shoulder fatigue. A sore shoulder caused him to miss six weeks earlier in the season.
