Here's a statement from Angels president John Carpino on the team opting out of its stadium lease. If they didn't do it now, they would've had to wait until the end of 2029. They will still play out of Angel Stadium next season. After that it's up in the air.

A source with knowledge of the Angels thinking tells ESPN that Houston's bench coach Joe Espada has drawn interest from the club as they expand their managerial search.‬ Espada replaced Alex Cora, who served as the Astros bench coach for one season before being named Red Sox manager.

Mike Scioscia announced he will not manage the Angels in 2019. He won 1,650 games and the 2002 World Series in his 19 seasons with the Angels and ranks 18th on the all-time win list. He's 59 and viewed as more of an old-school manager, so his managing days are likely done. He's a borderline Hall of Famer, in a group with Jim Leyland and Lou Piniella (the two just ahead of him on the wins list).

Cool stat by the Angels' PR department: With 4 more bases and 1 more steal, Mike Trout would register the third season of 300 total bases, 110 walks and 25 steals in AL history. The others: Mike Trout in 2013, Mike Trout in 2016.

Sunday is expected to be Mike Scioscia's final game as the Angels' manager, but he doesn't want any attention or recognition whatsoever. The Angels, who haven't announced anything, are doing their best under awkward circumstances. They gave out a bobblehead in his honor today and have played two video montages on the big screen.

If the Angels win their next two games, they'll finish with a .500 record, 81-81, in what is expected to be Mike Scioscia's final season as their manager. The Angels finished .500 or better in 12 of Scioscia's first 18 seasons.

In back-to-back pitches, Mike Trout hit his 39th home run and Shohei Ohtani came up with his 45th extra-base hit (in 317 at-bats). Is it crazy to think Trout and Ohtani could be 1 and 2 in WAR over the next five years? Ohtani can theoretically be a two-way guy for four of them.

Mike Trout enters the final weekend with a .462 OBP that is the highest in his career and a .629 SLG that is tied for his highest. But his biggest improvement has come on defense. "He's playing at a Gold Glove level in center field," Angels manager Mike Scioscia said. "I don't think there's a center fielder who's playing baseball better than Mike Trout on the defensive end."

Angels manager Mike Scioscia was asked whether Shohei Ohtani, who sports a .930 OPS and a 3.31 ERA, has exceeded the expectations for him as a rookie. "I wouldn't say he has exceeded anything. He's capable of doing everything we've seen him do on the field."

Ohtani happy he's finishing year strong at plate

Instead of opting for Tommy John surgery that would have shortened his rookie season with the Los Angeles Angels, Shohei Ohtani decided to focus on his hitting and he says finishing strong at the plate has been a really good feeling.

Heading into the final weekend, Mike Trout is on pace to lead the majors in OPS for the third time in four years. He entered Wednesday with a 9.5 FanGraphs WAR, which trails only Mookie Betts' 9.9, and could reach double-figure wins for the third time in seven seasons.
