Middleweight contender Constantinos Philippou suffered a cut above his left eye that has forced him out of a May 18 bout, the fighter confirmed to ESPN.com on Friday.
The injury to Philippou was earlier reported by MMAFighting.com.
Philippou was scheduled to face former Strikeforce 185-pound champion Ronaldo "Jacare" Souza in the UFC on FX 8 co-main event in in Santa Catarina, Brazil.
"Obviously, I'm very disappointed," Philippou said. "I went through weeks of training for this fight. Hopefully I get to fight Jacare in the future."
The injury occurred during a training session on Wednesday. Philippou received 11 stitches to close the wound.
Ranked No. 10 among middleweights by ESPN.com and sixth by UFC.com, Philippou (12-2) was looking to extend his win streak to six. In his most recent bout, Dec. 29 at UFC 155, the hard-hitting Philippou defeated Tim Boetsch via third-round TKO.
