Renan Barao to face Eddie Wineland

Interim bantamweight champion Renan Barao will defend his title Sept. 21 against Eddie Wineland at UFC 165 in Toronto, promotion officials announced Wednesday.

The fighters were originally scheduled to meet June 15 at UFC 161 in Winnipeg, Manitoba, but Barao suffered torn ligaments in his foot that forced him to withdraw from the bout.

Barao (30-1 with one no contest) makes the second defense of the title he won in July 2012 with a unanimous decision over Urijah Faber in Calgary, Alberta. He retained the belt Feb. 16 with a fourth-round submission of Michael McDonald.

Barao is ranked No. 8 by ESPN.com among all mixed martial artists. He is the top-ranked 135-pound fighter.

Wineland (20-8-1) has won two fights in a row, including a split decision over Brad Pickett in December. He is the fourth-ranked bantamweight.

Barao and Wineland will compete in the co-main event at UFC 165. Light heavyweight champion Jon Jones puts his belt on the line against Alexander Gustafsson in the main event.
