Mir, Rothwell granted exemptions

Two UFC heavyweights have been granted therapeutic use exemptions ahead of UFC 164 next weekend in Milwaukee.

A spokesperson from the Wisconsin Department of Safety and Professional Services confirmed to ESPN.com on Thursday the athletic commission had approved the use of exemptions for heavyweights Frank Mir and Ben Rothwell, but could not specify for what. Earlier, it was reported that the exemptions were for testosterone replacement therapy.

Mir, who fights Josh Barnett in the co-main event, has been approved for TRT in the past. The Nevada State Athletic Commission approved the 34-year-old for the treatment ahead of a title fight against Junior dos Santos in May 2012.

Rothwell, 31, has never been linked to a TRT exemption in the past. He's scheduled to face Brandon Vera on the pay-per-view portion of the event.

Both Mir (16-7) and Rothwell (32-9) are coming off losses in their most recent performances. Mir has dropped two in a row, including a TKO loss to Dos Santos in last year's title fight. Rothwell suffered a submission loss to Gabriel Gonzaga in January.
