With a light heavyweight title at stake, Glover Teixeira made weight Tuesday for his UFC Fight Night 28 main-event bout against Ryan Bader. Teixeira weighed in at 206 pounds for the five-round, nontitle showdown; Bader came in at 205.
The two meet Wednesday night in Belo Horizonte, Brazil. A win just about assures Teixeira a title fight against the Jon Jones-Alexander Gustafsson winner. Jones puts his 205-pound belt on the line Sept. 21 at UFC 165; he is favored to win.
"I want to get the title shot and it motivates me a little more," Teixeira said. "Bader is a good competitor. He's been fighting top-10 fighters for a long time, he's 'The Ultimate Fighter [Season 8] champion and he's a big name, so it feels good."
Teixeira (21-2) is currently riding a 19-fight win streak. He is ranked sixth among light heavyweights by ESPN.com.
Bader, ranked ninth by ESPN.com, is 15-3. In his most recent outing, on Jan. 26, he used a guillotine choke to submit Vladimir Matyushenko in the first round.
While there is no talk of Bader landing a title shot with a win against Teixeira, he is excited about playing the role of spoiler. Bader also has title-shot aspirations.
"Just to get the opportunity to fight in the main event is huge and I'm going to take full advantage of it," Bader said. "I get to go in and spoil all of [Teixeira's] plans, all of the UFC's plans and use it as my own.
"I get to go and jump into his spot, climb up the ladder, and closer to that title contention. Ultimately, what I want is a championship, so this is a huge fight and opportunity for me."
Middleweight contenders Ronaldo Souza and Yushin Okami will seek to take another step toward a title shot with a win in their co-main event fight. Souza weighed in at 186 pounds; Okami tipped the scale at 185.
Every other fighter on the card made weight for their bout. Eleven fights are scheduled for the event.
