Research Notes

  • Tuesday night against the Pacers, Kobe Bryant had a 41.2 usage percentage, meaning he was responsible for ending over 40% of the Lakers' plays (FGA, trips to the FT line, and TO) while he was on the court. That was the highest usage percentage by any player in a single game this season (min. 30 minutes), but what stood out even more was how bad the Lakers' offensive efficiency was with him on the court. The Lakers averaged fewer than 80 points per 100 possessions in the 44 minutes Kobe played, well below the marks for other teams with such high-usage players in single games this season.Taking it a step further, the Lakers' offensive efficiency with Kobe on the court was the lowest for any player who scored 40 points in a single game since 1996-97 (there have been 918 individual 40-point games in that span). This is partially because Kobe also had 10 turnovers along with his 40 points, but even more a result of his teammates combining to shoot just 12-48 from the field (1-17 3-pt FG) and 12-30 from the FT line.
