The melancholy end to the Big Three era in Miami

LeBron James, Dwyane Wade and Chris Bosh turned Miami into the center of the basketball universe. Six years later, the book on the Big Three closes just as abruptly and surprisingly as it opened.

Carmelo Anthony says Derrick Rose hasn't seemed distracted by his pending civil case: "He comes out here on the court and he's Derrick -- he's laughing and joking, he's having fun, he's enjoying it. I mean, it could be something different behind closed doors, but he's around us, it's all basketball, it's all fun, it's all enjoyment for him."

Carmelo Anthony says the Knicks have't decided yet if they will stage make any symbolic gestures during the national anthem. "Whatever we do, we want to do it as a group, as a team. we don't want to just have it as one individual, because it's really not going to have any substance behind it."

Carmelo Anthony on training camp: "The level of focus we had, what we wanted to implement this first week, what we wanted to get out of it, as far as getting a chance to jell with one another, play with one another, learning about each other out there on the court, I think this week was kind of a crucial week."

Derrick Rose believes that if he were to miss time while attending the trial, he would remain physically fit. "I do penitentiary work outs, bro. (I'm) in my room doing pushups, sit ups. I got it from Lamar Odom," Rose said. "…. When I'm in my room, it's stretching, working on my body, flexibility."

Derrick Rose reiterated that he thinks he'll be proven innocent in the civil suit against him alleging sexual assault: "I'm sensitive to the subject & the topic but in my mind I feel like I didn't do anything wrong so I can't waste a lot of time thinking about it. I have a great (legal) team handling it."

Some observers believe the triangle offense is ill-suited for Derrick Rose, but the point guard seems optimistic about the Knicks' approach: "It's open.... They allow me to play the way I know how to play and that's an up-tempo game. And to attack, downhill." NYK will use the triangle in half court sets this year.

Derrick Rose said coaches have been impressed by his stamina, which is tracked by wearable technology: "The training staff went into depth about how hard I go and how much distance I cover and the impact of how I just play. And they have to kick me off the court here and there cause of how hard I work."

Here's Joakim Noah's on patriotism: "Flags, patriotism and all that, I'm not really into that. I come from a lot of different places. I don't feel like one country is better than another one or that I'm ready to die for a flag or a country. I'm not like that. I've never really been into, never really understood patriotism but at the end of the day, I understand."

Here are some of Derrick Rose's thoughts on Joakim Noah's anti-war stance: "The last thing he wants is to make a certain group feel a certain way.... His heart, how careful he is & how thoughtful he is about people, I just don't want to people to paint an image of him who he's not. He's a caring guy, a loving guy, and the last thing he wants is the attention that's coming to him."

Carmelo Anthony said he was fine with Joakim Noah skipping the team dinner in West Point, as he cleared it with the team first. "For him to take the stance that he took and really say it publicly and really mean it and really feel then he'd have to really believe in that."

Ian Begley ESPN Staff Writer

Joakim Noah says he understands why West Point would be upset with his decision to skip the Knicks team dinner. "They opened up their home to us for us to have a camp....So I understand where they're coming from. I don't mean no disrespect. It's just I didn't feel comfortable in that environment."

Ian Begley ESPN Staff Writer

Joakim Noah said he spoke to Phil Jackson in the wake of his decision to skip a team dinner at West Point due to his anti-war stance. "Phil just told me just stay focused on basketball. That's what I was brought here to do. But also stand for what you believe in."

Marshall Plumlee, an Army reservist, says Joakim Noah's anti-war stance hasn't distracted the Knicks and that he has no problem with Noah skipping a team dinner with cadets. "I just want to stress how great of a teammate he's been... I hold Joakim Noah in a very high regard," Plumlee said.

Knicks center Marshall Plumlee, who is a member of the Army Reserve, was asked about Joakim Noah's anti-war stance. He says he respects everyone's beliefs. "They may not necessarily be my own. But that doesn't give me the right to dismiss them," Plumlee said. "I support (Noah) just as he supports me."

Here's Derrick Rose on why he thinks this was the best training camp of his career: "I look at it as the years that I've played on the league, this the most focus I've had knowing the situation -- what I'm getting myself into, the big year we have ahead of us."

Rockets coach Mike D'Antoni said he expects to give some of his veteran players some good minutes for the first preseason game against the Shanghai Sharks on Sunday. D'Antoni wants the Rockets to develop some chemistry quickly but will use the final two preseason games as more of a dress rehearsal. "Give them a good run, see how the game goes," D'Antoni said Saturday. "I'm a believer we're there to get them better. They got to play with each other, we have a hard (regular season) schedule to start, so it's not like we can just kinda lull into it, we got to get them ready."
