Sloan agrees to eBay auction to benefit foundation

SALT LAKE CITY -- Utah Jazz coach Jerry Sloan let his children decide how they wanted to raise money for the foundation named for their late mother, Bobbye. So when one of them came up with the idea of auctioning off part of the coach's time on a game day, he couldn't say no.

"My daughter has all the ideas. I just happened to be the one who can get her a couple of tickets," Sloan joked Monday.

Although he acknowledges he's not the most pleasant guy to be around when he's focused on a game, Sloan agreed to "Game Day With Coach Sloan," an eBay auction to benefit The Bobbye and Jerry Sloan Hand-In-Hand Foundation. And joking aside, Sloan was glad to help the foundation set up in the name of Bobbye Sloan, who died of cancer in June 2004.

The winner will receive a pass to attend the Jazz shootaround the morning before they face LeBron James and the Cleveland Cavaliers on Jan. 21, have lunch with Sloan and get the coach's tickets for the game. Transportation and two nights in a downtown hotel are also part of the package.

Although the prize includes a pregame meeting with the coach and his staff, it isn't quite an all-access, all-day pass.

"I'm pretty cranky. I have to have my nap," Sloan said.

The auction runs through Dec. 8.
