McDermott on what Dwyane Wade gave him for his number. Wade is wearing his customary #3 -- McDermott is now wearing #11. "He still hasn't given me anything," McDermott said. "He told me he's going to give me a lot of open shots. So that's the trade-off."

Doug McDermott, on if it has been strange coming to work and not seeing Derrick Rose and Joakim Noah: "It's weird," McDermott said after Thursday's practice. "It still doesn't quite feel real. But I think it's for the better. Not saying anything bad about those guys, obviously they meant a lot to this organization and helped me a lot. But I think we just needed a new vibe and I think we got it with these guys. And I just feel like everyone is -- the vibe is different. It's a much better better vibe. Obviously, wish those guys the best in New York."

Doug McDermott, on if coach Fred Hoiberg has treated players differently in his second season: "He's been much more demanding on us. He's really vocal out there and I've noticed a difference for sure. Obviously, he's real hard on himself about last year, as we are too. We don't want that to happen again so we're going to do everything we can right off the bat to try and fix it."

Isaiah Thomas on Al Horford: "It's so crazy to have a guy like that on the team that -- we shot together a couple days ago and he was just like, ‘Man, I'm here to make things easier for you. So just let me know what you need.' That's just wonderful, especially a guy that has that much talent. My job is just making things easier for others and he's making it easier for me already."

New addition Pau Gasol getting in some work. GM R.C. Buford said this about Gasol: "You have to try to find the right fits and this isn't the first time we have approached Pau with an opportunity in our organization. With the respect we've had competing against him and with the exposure that our group has had against him in international competition, as well, our group knew the potential. We'll find out how we all come together."

Mavs muscle watch: C/PF Dwight Powell tips the scales at a "fighting weight" of 245 now. He was a bit under 230 at the end of the season, bulked up to as high as 255 and slimmed down to a weight that allows him to maintain his energy and mobility with significantly more strength. (Powell, who signed a four-year, $37 million contract this summer, confirmed that he doesn't carry his wallet onto the scale.) "It's useful weight," coach Rick Carlisle said. "It's not just weight to be heavier. It's muscle, it's basketball weight. It's combination of strength and a little bit more dynamic thrust. It's going to help him."
