Hayes, 6-8 with a 7-3 wingspan, went undrafted but some college observers see him as having the potential to be a versatile defender at the next level with a strong outside shot – something the Knicks certainly could use. Hayes, who worked out for the Knicks prior to the draft, averaged 14 points, 6 rebounds and 2.7 assists per game last year. Hayes' agreement with the Knicks was first reported by Darren Wolfson.

Statement from Cavs assistant general manager Koby Altman after a quiet draft night when Cleveland made no picks and no trades: "We came into tonight's NBA Draft with an opportunistic mindset should a situation develop for us to acquire any pick we felt would help improve our roster. While we had discussions specifically focused on acquiring picks tonight, we did not feel any of the draft-related options available to us created an opportunity to improve our team or tie into larger deals at this point. As we do year-round, our group will continue to creatively and aggressively evaluate and consider potential trades and free agent signings that would help us reach our singular goal of winning another NBA championship."
