Willy Hernangomez said Jeff Hornacek talked to him at shootaround about improving on the defensive end, which seems to be the reason that Hornacek kept the second-year big man out of the rotation. Hernangomez acknowledged that he needs to improve on defense and said he wasn't concerned about being out of the rotation in the Knicks' opener. "I have to wait for my moment, my chance to be on the court…. When the team needs me, I'll be there. So I just have to keep working and waiting for my moment. Just like last year: first couple of moments I didn't play a lot, but I think this year is way different. So I have to keep working." Hornacek said Enes Kanter and Kyle O'Quinn earned spots in the rotation in preseason but nothing is set in stone at the moment.

Brandon Ingram's preseason funk continues as he is off to a 2-for-11 shooting start in this game. He's trying to be aggressive, attacking the basket and shooting on pull-ups but not much is falling so far.

Lonzo Ball's first basket as a Laker comes with 4:49 left in second on a 3-pointer. But moments later, Ball tried dribbling by Patrick Beverley, who stripped Ball clean near halfcourt for an easy layup. Earlier in the game, Ball crossed-over Beverley, who whiffed while going for the steal.

There are some little things Lonzo Ball does that will make his coaches and teammates love him. At one point, Ball threw a pass ahead of Larry Nance Jr., who caught up to the pass on the way to the paint but it seemed to catch him off guard and he pulled back out and passed it away. Ball immediately raised his arms in a shooting motion seeing that Nance could've driven for a basket or foul if he kept going. Ball and his teammates are still learning one another but you can see how Ball will lead teammates to the basket. On another play, Brandon Ingram missed on a drive and fell hard. Ball followed in to try to rebound but the Clips rebounded and raced down court. Ball landed near Ingram and extended his hand and waited to make sure Ingram got up and was OK. Things like that and the passing will make teammates love playing with Ball more.

Lakers' first sub off the bench was Jordan Clarkson, whom Magic Johnson wants to compete for Sixth Man of the Year. Before the game, Johnson shook hands with Clarkson but only once he got Clarkson to smile. Johnson told Clarkson he wants the sixth man to have fun.

A buzz circulates throughout Staples Center when Lakers fans started celebrating that the Dodgers advanced to the World Series. The arena then announced the final score minutes later to a loud ovation.

Michael Beasley was in a walking boot in the locker room. He said his left ankle injury was painful but there were no structural issues. Beasley landed on Russell Westbrook's foot in his first two minutes on the court.

The Knicks are expected to sign North Carolina forward Isaiah Hicks to a two-way contract by the end of the week, per league sources. The club left its second 2-way spot open after training camp with the hopes of finding a quality free agent. They have now filled both 2-way spots and have a full roster. Hicks was in training camp with Charlotte. The agreement was first reported by The Vertical.

Patrick Beverley is already testing Lonzo Ball, picking up the rookie three-quarter court often and shoving the rookie at halfcourt at one point. Ball doesn't have an assist yet in his first eight minutes and has missed both of his shots but he is pushing the ball up and moving t while doing other things like swatting Blake Griffin from behind on help defense and he has four early rebounds.

From the All-Lonzo, All-the-Time department, I'm told he had Subway for lunch and needed 23 tickets to the game. Immediately family only.

I'm guessing this Knicks fan is leaving OKC with mixed emotions:

Knicks fall to Oklahoma City, 105-84. Kristaps Porzingis (31 points on 11-for-25 shooting) was a lone bright spot. Carmelo Anthony started slowly but finished with 22 points on 20 shots in his OKC debut. He seemed to have a good time beating up his old team.

Jeff Hornacek has inserted Willy Hernangomez, Damyean Dotson and Frank Ntilikina into the game in garbage time. It wouldn't be a surprise if all three were in the regular rotation once the Knicks fall out of contention.

Ian Begley ESPN Staff Writer

Willy Hernangomez checks in with 3:40 to play and the Knicks down 21. Frank Ntilikina will probably check back in shortly. Need to get him on the floor in garbage time here.
