The Pelicans are in the process of signing Hollis Thompson to a 10-day contract, ESPN's Marc Stein reports. Thompson is a career 39% 3-point shooter in three and a half seasons with the Philadelphia 76ers before being waived on Jan. 4.

Dealing Andrew Bogut and/or Deron Williams wouldn't pull the plug on the Mavs fighting for the West's final playoff berth. Dallas recently proved it could win without the two veterans. Williams missed all of the Mavs' 5-2 stretch that included wins over the Spurs, Cavaliers and Jazz. Yogi Ferrell averaged 15.3 points, 4.6 assists and 2.0 steals as the starting point guard during that span, which started after the rookie joined the Mavs on a 10-day deal. Bogut played only eight minutes during that stretch before a hamstring strain sidelined him for eight straight games. Salah Mejri took advantage of the increased playing time during Bogut's absence. Mejri has averaged 5.0 points, 6.9 rebounds and 1.6 blocks in 14.1 minutes in February, when he has a net rating of plus-13.3. "We were able to win some games without those guys, as you said," coach Rick Carlisle said. "If it turns out they're not here, they're not here and this is what we've got. If there are trades, there's a chance there's going to be some players coming back that can help us. Look, we'll see. We'll know by 2 o'clock (CT) tomorrow and we'll go from there."

Lakers head coach Luke Walton agrees with new president of basketball operations Magic Johnson that he would like to retain all of the Lakers' young core, but he's hesitant to use the word "untouchable" in case the right deal comes along (Walton used Steph Curry hypothetically being put on the trade market as an example).

I don't know if this has anything to do with Minnesota's trade talks with the Knicks for Derrick Rose, but it will fuel conspiracy theories: Ricky Rubio started following Kristaps Porzingis on Instagram recently. Also, Knicks rookie Willy Hernangomez bacatipned with Rubio, a friend of his, over the All-Star break.

Mavs PG J.J. Barea (calf) practiced but will miss at least next 3 games. "There's a possibility we'll only have 12 players," Rick Carlisle said, pending possible trades of Andrew Bogut and Deron Williams.

Deron Williams and Andrew Bogut were held out of Mavs practice. "With the trade deadline tomorrow, you can read a lot into that," coach Rick Carlisle said. "That's about all I'm going to say about that."

Lakers head coach Luke Walton said new president of basketball operations Magic Johnson met with the team before practice today to introduce himself and give them a brief message.

ESPN Sources: Utah, Cleveland engaged on trade over weekend that included Shelvin Mack, Jordan McRae, etc. Talks have since stalled out.

Discussions surrounding a potential trade of Derrick Rose continued between the Knicks and the Timberwolves on Wednesday, according to a source. It is unclear what, specifically, Minnesota would offer the Knicks in a potential swap for Rose. Although according to ESPN's Brian Windhorst, the Timberwolves are motivated to move Ricky Rubio because team president and coach Tom Thibodeau sees rookie Kris Dunn as the franchise's point guard of the future.
