Anthony Davis was asked about criticisms that he didn't give enough effort at times on the defensive end. His response: "I looked at it a little bit. I think I could have played harder. But like I said, that's last year. I don't even want to talk about last year. All of that's irrelevant right now. I'm focused on this year. … When you have guys out there pushing, who want to win with you, it changes your whole mindset for the game, especially during games. Like I said, we have guys who play hard. Coach hasn't had to stop anyone about playing hard, or come to anyone and talk to them about playing hard. It's all ‘Let's figure out the offensive end, let's figure out the defensive scheme.' That was last year. People say I could have did this, that and the other thing. Do I agree? Sometimes. Maybe. I'm just focused on what I can do this year to make us better."

Anthony Davis says playing hard and effort were what led to the Pelicans finishing 28th in defense last season. "Everybody is talking, everybody is playing hard," said about the difference about this year's defense. "Coach hasn't had to stop practice yet for effort or working hard or playing hard. That was the big issue for us last year. I think we've had five practices, or six. He probably stopped us two minutes and was like, ‘All right, let's pick it up a little bit.' And that was it. And that all leads to defense. You're just playing hard. You're going to make mistakes. Just by playing hard you're able to cut down some of those mistakes."
