Kevin Garnett to me in 2014 on his philosophy: "My makeup is to be competitive and to win. If you're not stepping on, then you're the one being stepped on…I'm an alpha. I'm an alpha, man. I like to think that the game is to be dominated. There wasn't any room for anything else. I'm playing with young guys who are super younger than me and more athletic, faster, however, whatever. But I have to set an alpha-ness about the whole thing and instill leadership and all these other things. Like I said earlier, sometimes you would buck and you'd butt heads. But the younger generation, I think they look for a lot more approval from their peers and satisfaction and the comments that people make and [from] articles. Look here, man, if you work on your game and you get better, then you're going to be better, which hopefully means that you're going to play better and have confidence to do things better. And when you're better, all things change people's perception. When it comes to being a better person and how you treat people, that's on you. But when it comes to the game, you don't need to get anybody's approval. You just need to work on your game, work your ass off, stay true to your craft, perfect and try to perfect as much of the things that you do well. Try to perfect those. But the things you don't do well, work on them even more."

Anthony Davis on rookie Buddy Hield's first official NBA practice: "He did good. There were times where Buddy did rookie mistakes. It happens. And as a leader, my job is to correct him, or if he's moving too fast tell him to slow down, show him what we're looking for in the offense or the defense. But he's a great listener. You tell him to do something, he might forget to do something else because he's trying to do what you told him to do. But that's always good. I'm happy that he's here. He's always willing to learn and work hard."

Anthony Davis said he feels great after participating in virtually every part of the Pelicans' first practice. Davis, who had an ultrasonic debridement of his left knee, said he only didn't do some conditioning toward the end.

Some Rockets observations after first day of training camp on Saturday: Coach Mike D'Antoni said starting point guard Pat Beverley will miss the afternoon session and probably Sunday with cuts on his feet. Beverley said he's trying to lose five pounds during camp. He's currently 198 pounds. The plan is to have carbs in the morning and eat more fish and chicken afterward. Last year's first round pick, Sam Dekker, who missed the majority of last season recovering from back surgery, said "best I've ever felt in my life." Dekker has been working at small forward and shooting guard.

"You always find a place for a guy like that." Doc Rivers says he was willing to bring KG to the Clippers:

Fran Fraschilla @franfraschilla

Don't know if an NBA superstar ever practiced harder or set tone better than KG. First in every drill and made "competing" a skill.
