Thunder roll dice on Ferguson after his Down Under detour

First-round pick Terrance Ferguson, who played last season in Australia, checks a lot of boxes for the Thunder, but only time will tell if he can be the complement to superstar Russell Westbrook the team has been seeking.

NBA draft grades: Thunder earn solid marks

Oklahoma City swung for the fences with Terrance Ferguson, who could end up being a great value at No. 21. However, he could easily be a bust as well.

Royce Young ESPN Staff Writer

The Thunder were extremely active this past week pursuing different trades, from moving into the top 10 of the draft to getting in the mix for Kristaps Porzingis and Jimmy Butler, but came up empty and instead stayed put at 21. "We're involved in everything. We're going to pursue everything," Sam Presti said Thursday. "Don't be upset just because it's not spewing out of this building, that we're not pursuing the same things that you read about on the Internet. We're going to make all those calls. We're going to pursue all those things."

Sam Presti on Terrance Ferguson: "He has a speed, a size and a length, an athleticism, and the ability to shoot the ball from range that makes him exciting."

ESPN Stats and Information

Thunder select Terrance Ferguson No.21. He averaged 4.6 points playing overseas last year after originally committing to Arizona.

Ben Alamar ESPN Analytics

Terrance Ferguson ranks 35th overall in ESPN's analytic draft model. We estimate that there is an 80% chance that he is a bust in the NBA.

With the No. 21 overall pick, the Thunder selected Terrance Ferguson, who bypassed college to play professionally in Australia. Oklahoma City has had mixed results selecting in the 20s. They landed Serge Ibaka at 24 back in 2008 and Reggie Jackson at 24 in 2011, but their last four picks in this range have been Mitch McGary, Josh Huestis, Archie Goodwin and Perry Jones.

Royce Young ESPN Staff Writer

The Thunder take Terrance Ferguson with the 21st overall pick. In need of talent to provide Russell Westbrook some offensive help, Sam Presti takes a swing at one of the players with high potential, but currently very raw.

There's growing chatter Frank Jackson has a first round promise, and that OKC is the team. The Thunder have a history of first round promises, with players like Reggie Jackson and Andre Roberson.

Four potential All-Star free agents

With Paul George reportedly declaring he won't return to the Pacers after next season, the summer of 2018 is shaping up to be a potentially star-studded free agent market. It could become even more interesting if the player options of LeBron James and Russell Westbrook don't get picked up.

Other mock drafts have the Duke freshman sharpshooter going later, but this isn't an ordinary mock draft. Russell Westbrook needs another scorer in the backcourt.
