Lin: Regained love of basketball with Hornets

During his stint with the Hornets, new Nets point guard Jeremy Lin says he rediscovered his love for basketball.

Nets PG Jeremy Lin also told team website in Facebook live interview that he had "lost the joy for the game" after struggling in L.A. with the Lakers and hit a low point -- albeit not as low as when he was first trying to stick on an NBA roster -- but found new life in his career when he went to Charlotte last season. A "breath of fresh air," Lin called it.

Lastly, Kevin Garnett to me in 2014 on working with younger players and what he believes today's game is lacking: "The fact that I was able to help guys progress, I've helped guys become men. I've helped guys communicate and taught them how to communicate to others [who] didn't necessarily understand [them]. I think our game is lacking a bit of that. We seek approval from each other by being friends and guys work out together. If that's the times, that's the times. But true competition comes in, ‘There's a winner, and there's a loser.' And I don't know anybody who wants to be a loser, who's calling themselves a wimp…I'm not saying you've got to hate a guy, but if you do, I understand when you're between the lines. And 'hate' is a very strong word, so I would use the word 'dislike.' I get it. To me, that's alpha. That's leadership. A leader is going to show more in his actions versus his words."

More from Kevin Garnett to me in 2014 on his philosophy and what he wanted to instill in his teammates: "I'll be honest, I'm old school, man. We're out here to beat these guys. We're not out here to be their friends. We're not out here to make any friends. Ain't no friends out here. I've played against two of my best friends in the world in that being Chauncey Billups and Tyron Lue. It don't get no more closer than that. And I'm out here trying to bust they a-- like they trying to bust mine. So coming in, we instill something, whether it's the coach [or me] and that's to compete and be the best. And being the best, that means you wasn't going to be liked by everybody and you wasn't going to be friends with everybody…If ain't nobody feeling that, then you know what? Be yourself. But this is how we're going to win…We didn't make any friends. You can be his friend after we're done…"

Kevin Garnett to me in 2014 on his philosophy: "My makeup is to be competitive and to win. If you're not stepping on, then you're the one being stepped on…I'm an alpha. I'm an alpha, man. I like to think that the game is to be dominated. There wasn't any room for anything else. I'm playing with young guys who are super younger than me and more athletic, faster, however, whatever. But I have to set an alpha-ness about the whole thing and instill leadership and all these other things. Like I said earlier, sometimes you would buck and you'd butt heads. But the younger generation, I think they look for a lot more approval from their peers and satisfaction and the comments that people make and [from] articles. Look here, man, if you work on your game and you get better, then you're going to be better, which hopefully means that you're going to play better and have confidence to do things better. And when you're better, all things change people's perception. When it comes to being a better person and how you treat people, that's on you. But when it comes to the game, you don't need to get anybody's approval. You just need to work on your game, work your ass off, stay true to your craft, perfect and try to perfect as much of the things that you do well. Try to perfect those. But the things you don't do well, work on them even more."
