Ferrell backs out of Mavericks deal, agent says

Guard Yogi Ferrell and the Mavericks came to terms on a two-year, $5.3 million deal Thursday, but the 25-year-old guard reconsidered overnight, according to his agent.

The Mavericks will likely follow a timeline on how they structure each signing by using up to the $6M in available cap space to sign Dirk Nowitzki ($5M team option was declined in June to create room) first. Once Nowitzki is signed, Dallas will exceed the cap by signing Yogi Ferrell (early bird rights), Ryan Broekhoff (minimum exception) and Salah Mejri (minimum exception). The Mavericks will have the $4.4 million room midlevel exception still available to use with 14 guaranteed contracts.

The Dallas Mavericks hired former WNBA head coach Jenny Boucek as assistant to the basketball staff/special projects, Rick Carlisle announced. Boucek spent last season as a player development coach with the Sacramento Kings, becoming the third woman to hold an NBA coaching position. "I consider her one of the brightest minds in our game and welcome her to Dallas," Carlisle said in a statement.

The Mavs signed rookie forward Kostas Antetokounmpo to a two-way deal, waiving Jalen Jones. Antetokounmpo, Giannis' younger brother was the No. 60 pick in the draft.

Cuban over Jordan drama: 'I just want to win'

Telling ESPN there's "like four guys I hold grudges with, and three of them are from grade school," Mavs owner Mark Cuban said one phone call was all it took for him and DeAndre Jordan to put the past behind them and agree to "let's go win."

Sources: DeAndre Jordan's salary for his one-year deal with the Mavericks is $22.9 million. He would have made $24.1 million if he opted into the final year of his contract with the Clippers. With no state income taxes in Texas, Jordan didn't actually take a pay cut.

Mavs had Luka Doncic as the No. 1 player on their draft board. "It wasn't even close," Mark Cuban told ESPN.

The Mavs didn't have any sort of bury-the-hatchet talk with DeAndre Jordan before bringing him to Dallas a few years after he left them at the free agency altar. "There was no need," Rick Carlisle told ESPN. "There just wasn't. Sometimes things take a while to happen. Sometimes you have obstacles, you work through them and figure it out. That's what we did." In doing so, the Mavs added an impactful rim presence at both ends of the floor, providing a lob threat for young franchise cornerstones Dennis Smith Jr. and Luka Doncic. "He's a good fit for any team that's trying to get better," Carlisle said of Jordan.
