Nets point guard D'Angelo Russell was cited for marijuana possession after being detained Wednesday at New York's LaGuardia Airport following a baggage check, a spokesperson for the New York Port Authority Police told Newsday. Russell was en route to Louisville, Kentucky, where he was raised. The spokesman told Newsday that Russell was summoned for possession of less than 50 grams of marijuana and later released. In a statement, the Nets said they were aware of the situation and gathering more information. The 23-year-old Russell is set to become a restricted free agent this offseason. He helped lead Brooklyn to 42 wins while making his All-Star Game debut this past season. He did so by averaging career bests in points (21.1 per game) and assists (7.0) as the Nets reached the playoffs for the first time since 2015, ultimately losing to the Sixers. Teammates and coach Kenny Atkinson alike had lauded Russell for his leadership, improved conditioning and professional approach to the game. The former No. 2 overall draft pick of the Lakers, Russell has career averages of 16.5 points and 5.1 rebounds, while shooting 41.9 percent from the field and 35.3 percent from 3-point range over four NBA seasons.

Jarrett Allen will work on adding strength and extending his range to the 3-point line this summer. Here's Kenny Atkinson on Allen: "In our exit meetings Wednesday, we talked to him about the things he wanted to work on. I expect him to listen, and in two-three years, to be an elite center in this league. He's going in that direction. I'm really thrilled with his development so far."

Nets veteran Jared Dudley was asked what advantages the Nets would have over the Knicks in free agency (4/4): "And it depends on—some people want to take on that Garden. Some players want this. The advantages depend on the player. And I would say that they have, right now, Brooklyn has put [itself] in fighting position to be able to land somebody."

Nets veteran Jared Dudley was asked what advantages the Nets would have over the Knicks in free agency (3/4): "So I would say as much media as we have here, I'm pretty sure over there with the Knicks there's a little more media to deal with, a little more scrutiny. There's less scrutiny here, and that's just how it is. How it is when I was with the Clippers, that's just the way it is. Practice facility. If you want to be here in Brooklyn, if some players want to live in the city and you can drive 10-15 minutes to practice, or do you want to go all the way to Westchester and take an hour and have a driver? You know what I mean? There's a lot of different stuff, man."

Nets veteran Jared Dudley was asked what advantages the Nets would have over the Knicks in free agency (2/4): "Out of 10 pages, they got seven pages (of coverage in a newspaper). That's just how it is. And nothing is going to change there. I don't care, Dolan could burn down Manhattan and they're going to talk about the Knicks, let's be honest. Let's be honest. And so for us, the advantages they have here is, for one, the foundation and the culture we have. And not just in New York and in the NBA, one of the best young cores here. They have draft picks, they have cap space. And I know the Knicks do have cap space and they have a pretty good couple, one or two guys."

Nets veteran Jared Dudley was asked what advantages the Nets would have over the Knicks in free agency (1/4): "It's advantages and disadvantages. The advantages the Knicks have is the history. There's a lore that they have about playing in the Garden, you know, having that Knicks jersey, even though they might not have been good for the last, you know, 15, 20 years and stuff like that. But it's the Knicks. It's like the Lakers. When I played for the Clippers and we were the 3 seed, they were talking about the Lakers."

DeMarre Carroll says that his wife will be making his free-agency decision this summer: “I'm dictating this free agency," Carroll said his wife told him recently. "It's been 10 years and I've been sitting aside” and she said it's my time. So it's her time, all I can do is sit back. I hope my wife picks a good destination and hopefully its back here but we'll see what happens.”
