When will Lonzo breakout?

Lonzo Ball had a tough time creating offense in his Lakers debut, and it likely won't get any easier over his next few games. Bledsoe averaged two steals per game last season, Holiday and Lowry ranked among the top four PGs in Defensive Real Plus-Minus last season, Wall is a former All-Defensive team selection and Rubio's 2.1 steals per game ranks among the top 15 ever.

No magic in Lonzo debut

When Lonzo Ball took the floor for his Lakers debut on Thursday night, he likely didn't imagine that Clippers PG Patrick Beverly would spoil it.

LaVar Ball retorts: 'Who is Patrick Beverley?'

LaVar Ball fired back at Patrick Beverley after the Clippers guard shouted an obscenity as he walked into the locker room that seemed to be aimed at Lonzo Ball.

LaVar Ball and Lonzo Ball doing what is their routine and having a post-game chat. LaVar Ball says he noticed how the arena was still full in the fourth even as the Lakers were getting blown out and that his son has authored a few stirring comebacks of his own although the Lakers held the rookie out of the fourth with a game to play in Phoenix on Friday.

Clippers guard Patrick Beverley screamed outside locker room, "Weak a** m****** f******. Bring him out on the court with me and i I will tear his a** up," It's presumed Beverley is talking about Lakers rookie guard Lonzo Ball.

Lonzo: 'It counts now so it hurts a lot more' (2:08)

Mike Schmitz ESPN

A true 'welcome to the NBA' moment for Lonzo Ball versus the feisty Patrick Beverley tonight. Ball has traditionally had issues with guards who apply heavy ball pressure (see: De'Aaron Fox) and his struggles breaking down defenders in the half court really showed up against Beverley. Becoming more of a threat as a pick and roll scorer, namely adding a reliable pull up and floater, will open up the floor for Ball in the half court. Only 10% of Ball's possessions at UCLA came via pick and roll, and he played a very transition-heavy style with Chino Hills as well. The adjustment to the ball-screen-based NBA was expected for Ball, who also struggled during UCLA's season-opening Australia tour and his Summer League debut. Despite tonight's struggles, Ball has elite instincts, is tremendous in transition, plays a quick-decision style that require much breakdown game, and will surely settle in as the season progresses if the Lakers can surround him with shooting.

Lonzo Ball notes that summer league and preseason is over and the wins and losses count now. And he judges how he does by wins. "We got blown out so I didn't play too well," Ball said. "All I care about is winning."

Lonzo Ball liked the shots he got tonight. He said Patrick Beverley did what he's best at in picking him beyond halfcourt. "It's basketball and he plays 94-feet and that is what he's supposed to do."
