Phil Jackson didn't seem bothered by Bulls chairman Jerry Reinsdorf's assertion that Joakim Noah is no longer a top player. "I do see that he is getting (older), things are going to fall off a little bit for him but I don't think that is going to keep him from being a competitor," Jackson said.

Phil Jackson knows he took on a lot of risk by acquiring players with injury histories this summer. His motivation was simple: to build a winning team. "In our situation (it) is definitely worth the risk. We have had two seasons that have not been successful and we needed to move forward and win."

Jeff Hornacek is pretty optimistic about the future health of his club. "First of all, I don't think we're going to have injuries. I don't think we're ever going to talk about it," he said Friday. Derrick Rose's knee issues have been well documented. But neither he nor any other Knick will enter the season on minutes restrictions, GM Steve Mills said.

Maybe the best line from Phil Jackson's press conference: asked to assess his presidency, Jackson says, "We've been successful in getting it to a position where we can operate as a basketball team. That's been our first goal. And to eat some dung in the process, we had to do that and live with it."

Phil Jackson was asked what would constitute a successful season for the Knicks: "Championship, those are everybody's goals. That's not our expectation. We're not saying we're going to do that, but that would be a successful season."

Jeff Hornacek doesn't want Carmelo Anthony to feel like he has to ‘do everything' for the Knicks this season. The coach wants to lighten the scoring burden on Anthony in 2016-17. Both he and Phil Jackson would also like to see Anthony run the floor more often this season to create easy baskets.

Jeff Horancek said the Knicks will "open it up" in their early offense & settle into the triangle offense in half-court sets. The triangle has been derided by fans and some media over the past two seasons as the Knicks struggled. Said Hornacek: "It's just a way to space the floor."

Phil Jackson said he'd like to keep realistic expectations for the season but believes the only thing that will keep NYK from success this year is injuries, which is reasonable. Derrick Rose has played in just 40% of his games over the past 5 seasons. Joakim Noah played in 29 games last year.

Jeff Hornacek said there are no minutes restrictions on Derrick Rose heading into the season but he, and everyone else, will be closely monitored. Phil Jackson notes that technological advances allow the club to more closely monitor player health.

Asked about his opt-put clause at the end of the season, Phil Jackson says he hasn't thought about it and hints that it was put in for the possibility of a lockout prior to the 2016-17 season.

Phil Jackson doesn't want to talk specific projections, but says the only thing that should keep the Knicks from having a successful season are injuries.

Jeff Hornacek reiterates that he'd like Carmelo Anthony to pursue more opportunities in transition this season. He says he's seen Carmelo do it a few times in informal pickup games with teammates.

Phil Jackson was asked how he planned to handle players potentially kneeling during the National Anthem: "I'll ask for a consultation and we'll talk about it as a team. We want to do something unified."

Phil Jackson and Steve Mills were asked if they looked into the Derrick Rose case before making the trade and if they have any concerns about public perceptions of the organization in light of the case. Phil Jackson says, "I don't think we're going to talk about it. Thanks for the question."

Phil Jackson on the Derrick Rose case: "We anticipate that it will not affect his season hopefully, training camp or games." Jackson says the club will let the legal process play out.
